One killed in cabin fire/explosion in Central Nebraska early Tuesday morning

Shelton, Neb. - The Buffalo County Sheriff's Office is investigating the circumstances surrounding a death, explosion and fire at a rural cabin south of Shelton, NE.  On October 15, 2024 Shelton firefighters and law enforcement were called to a fire south of Shelton, NE on the south side of the Platte River.  The incident was reported at 5:22 AM; the exact time of the explosion / fire is unknown.

While on scene the body of a probable adult male was found deceased inside the cabin remains.  The investigation into the cause of fire and death of the individual is ongoing.  No other occupants were believed to in the cabin at the time of explosion.  The cabin was destroyed.  From preliminary investigation, foul play is not suspected.  The identity of the victim has not been confirmed and investigation continues.  The Buffalo County Attorney’s Office has ordered an autopsy.    

The Shelton Volunteer Fire and Rescue Department and deputies were assisted by members of the Wood River and Gibbon Volunteer Fire Departments, Nebraska State Fire Marshal’s Office, and Buffalo County Attorney’s Office.
