The historic Pony Express will once again ride across the nation this month as part of the 2026 National Pony Express Re-Ride, a 24-hour-a-day horseback relay commemorating one of America's most iconic mail delivery systems.
The event begins June 15 in St. Joseph, Missouri, and follows the original Pony Express route more than 1,900 miles across eight states, including Nebraska. Riders will travel day and night carrying a traditional mochila filled with 1,570 commemorative letters before arriving in Old Sacramento, California, on June 25.
Organized annually by the National Pony Express Association, the re-enactment honors the Pony Express service that operated from April 1860 to October 1861, providing rapid mail delivery across the American frontier.
This year's ride carries added significance as it coincides with America's 250th anniversary celebration.
"The Pony Express exemplifies the enduring American spirit of perseverance and connection," said Petra Keller, corresponding secretary for the National Pony Express Association. "We invite everyone to come out along the trail to celebrate this monumental piece of our collective heritage."
A featured America 250 event is scheduled for June 24 in Carson City, where the National Pony Express Association will partner with the Carson City Historical Society to present "Saddle-Up Carson City." The event will include a presentation on Warren Upson and the role the Pony Express played in helping keep the Union connected during a pivotal period in American history.
The relay route passes through Missouri, Kansas, Nebraska, Colorado, Wyoming, Utah, Nevada and California. Communities along the trail are encouraged to attend local mochila exchanges, meet riders and horses, and participate in celebrations marking the event's passage.
The National Pony Express Association will also provide live GPS tracking throughout the ride, allowing the public to follow the relay's progress in real time.
The nonprofit organization is dedicated to preserving the history and legacy of the Pony Express through educational programs, trail preservation efforts and annual reenactments.
