The No. 6 Nebraska Rifle team, in a record-setting Sunday, defeated the No. 7 Air Force Falcons 4,728-4,716.The Huskers’ aggregate score of 4,728 is the best in program history, besting the 4,726 that NU shot against Alaska-Fairbanks last season. Nebraska’s team air rifle score was 2,384, another program record. The previous air rifle record was 2,381, also set against Alaska-Fairbanks last year.“Their hard work in practice showed through,” Head Coach Mindy Miles said. “We can still pick up a few points across the board. We broke the aggregate team score and posted a strong air score. This is the strong appearance by the Huskers I was looking forward to this season. There will be more great scores to come.”&nbsp;Huskers swept the first three spots overall. Sophomore Emma Rhode earned a first-place finish with an aggregate score of 1,186, while sophomore Tori Watts(1,185) and senior Cecelia Ossi (1,183) completed the sweep, finishing second and third, respectively. Huskers post record team scores among victory

The Tri-City Storm shocked the Des Moines Buccaneers with a goal during the final minute of Saturday’s showdown at Buccaneer Arena to lift the team to victory. The Storm defeated the Buccaneers by a final score of 4-3, following August Falloon’s team-leading sixth goal of the season with less than a minute to play. Tri-City improved to 6-2-0-0 in the victory, and returns home for back-to-back games at the Viaero Center next weekend. Friday’s battle against the Sioux Falls Stampede is set to begin at 7:05pm CT. Puck drop for Saturday’s contest against the Dubuque Fighting Saints is scheduled for 6:05pm CT. Luke Posthumus scored the first goal of his USHL career just over three minutes into Saturday’s opening period to give the Storm a 1-0 lead in the matchup. The goal was netted even strength, and was assisted by Carmelo Crandell. Vladislav Lukashevich scored his second goal of the year seventeen seconds later to increase the Storm’s lead to two goals. Luke Posthumus and Carmelo Crandell each notched an assist on the scoring play. Payton Nelson responded with his first goal of the year for the Buccaneers to cut into Tri-City’s lead at 8:35 of Saturday’s 1st&nbsp;period. The goal was netted even strength, and was assisted by Ben Kevan and Andrew Clarke. Cameron Briere scored his second goal of the season at 13:27 of the 1st&nbsp;period to give the Storm another two-goal advantage in the battle. Briere’s goal was scored even strength, and was assisted by Carmelo Crandell. An unassisted goal by Ben Kevan with less than fifteen seconds to play in Saturday’s 1st&nbsp;period brought Des Moines within one of Tri-City’s lead. Each team notched nine shots on net during the opening period, and the Storm carried a 3-2 advantage into the 2nd&nbsp;period.

The lone goal of the middle period was netted by Des Moines’ Lubomir Kupco with less than a minute to play. Owen Dyer recorded the lone assist on the scoring play. Kupco’s goal was his team-leading third of the season, and was netted at 19:39 of the period. Des Moines outshot Tri-City 10-8 during Saturday’s 2nd&nbsp;period, and the 3rd&nbsp;period began with a 3-3 score.

August Falloon scored his team-leading sixth goal of the year with thirty seconds to play in Saturday’s game to seal the Storm’s thrilling road victory. Falloon’s goal was the only scoring play of the final period. Trevor Connelly and Owen Beckner each notched an assist on the scoring play. The Buccaneers outshot the Storm 9-5 during the 3rd&nbsp;period, and 28-22 overall during the game.

Cameron Korpi improved to 6-0-0-0 on the season in goal for Tri-City following a 25-save-on-28-shot-performance. Adam Moller made 6 saves on 9 shots during the opening period of Saturday’s game for Des Moines, but was replaced in net by Ethan Dahlmeir for the 2nd&nbsp;and 3rd&nbsp;periods. Dahlmier recorded the loss in goal for the Buccaneers after making 12 saves on 13 shots.

The Storm’s powerplay finished the game 0/4, and Tri-City’s penalty kill was 3/3. August Falloon was named the 1st&nbsp;Star of the Game, with teammate Luke Posthumus collecting 2nd&nbsp;Star honors. Des Moines’ Ben Kevan was named the game’s 3rd&nbsp;Star. Tri-City improved to 6-2-0-0 overall, and 4-2-0-0 in games played against Western Conference competition in Saturday’s road victory.

Storm shocks Buccaneers with last-minute goal

The No. 2 Nebraska volleyball team swept No. 13 Penn State for the third time in a row with a 25-22, 25-22, 25-19 victory on Saturday night in front of a crowd of 8,590 at the Bob Devaney Sports Center.

With the win, Nebraska remained perfect on the season, improving to 17-0 and 8-0 in Big Ten Conference play. The Huskers also moved to 7-0 against ranked opponents with all seven wins coming in the past 12 matches.

Merritt Beason, Lindsay Krause and Harper Murray all finished with double-figure kills. Beason had 13 kills and hit .333. Krause matched Beason for match-high honors with 13 kills while hitting .300. Krause also tied her career high with two service aces. Murray totaled 10 kills on only 22 swings and added eight digs.

Bergen Reilly led the balanced offense with 33 assists, as Nebraska hit .269 for the match. Defensively, Lexi Rodriguez tied her season high with 18 digs, including 12 in the first set, and Andi Jackson had five stuffs as Nebraska's defense limited Penn State (13-4, 7-1 Big Ten) to just 32 kills in the match and a .117 attacking percentage.

Set 1: Nebraska started off the set with a 5-0 run with two kills by Krause and a kill by Beason and block by Beason and Allick. Krause added three kills in a row to take the Huskers to a 9-3 advantage. Murray and Krause connected on kills for a 15-8 lead, but Penn State scored three in a row to cut it to 15-11. Back-to-back kills gave the Huskers an 18-12 lead, but the Nittany Lions went on a 4-0 run to cut it to 18-16. But a Krause kill gave the Huskers a key sideout, and a Jackson and Reilly block helped put the Big Red back ahead 21-17. Beason tacked on three more kills down the stretch to close out a 25-22 win.&nbsp;

Set 2: After the Huskers scored first, Penn State scored eight in a row to go up 8-1. The Huskers committed four service errors early on to allow the Nittany Lions to remain ahead by seven, 11-4. Nebraska made up some ground with a Penn State service error and back-to-back aces by Krause to get within 11-7. Another Penn State service error preceded a block by Allick and Reilly that cut it to three, 12-9. Murray had back-to-back kills, the latter after two big digs by Rodriguez, to pull within 13-11. After six sideouts in a row, Penn State hit long to bring the Huskers within one, 16-15. Beason and Murray recorded kills to keep the Huskers down just one, and Reilly won a joust to draw NU even at 18-18. After a Penn State timeout, the teams sided out six straight rallies until Krause put down her 11th kill of the match for a 22-21 Husker lead, their first since 1-0. Beason and Jackson them combined for two straight blocks to earn set point at 24-21. After a Husker hitting error made it 24-22, Beason put the set away with her 11th kill of the night.&nbsp;

Nebraska Sweeps No. 13 Penn State

The Nebraska softball team completed its fall exhibition season with a doubleheader sweep of Colorado State on Sunday at Bowlin Stadium. The Huskers came from behind for a 4-3 walk-off victory in game one before jumping in front early and holding on for a 5-4 win in game two.

Jordy Bahl earned the win in both games, coming in for 2.0 innings of relief in game one and starting and pitching the first 4.0 innings of game two. Sarah Harness and Caitlin Olensky also saw action in the circle, combining to allow only one unearned run in 8.0 innings.

Offensively, Ava Bredwell went 3-for-7 with three RBIs in the doubleheader while Peyton Cody went 2-for-4 with a pair of doubles and Sydney Gray drove in two runs.

With its fall season complete, Nebraska will turn its attention to the 2024 season, which begins with four games at the Puerto Vallarta Challenge in Puerto Vallarta, Mexico, Feb. 8-10.

Game 1: Nebraska 4, Colorado State 3Nebraska scored twice in the sixth inning and once in the seventh to rally for a 4-3 walk-off win in game one of the doubleheader.

Colorado State jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the top of the first. A leadoff walk, a stolen base, an error and a two-out RBI single plated the game’s first run.

Nebraska stranded a runner at second base in both the first and second innings before Brooke Andrews tied the game with a one-out solo home run in the bottom of the third inning.

The Huskers threatened in the bottom of the fourth when Malia Thoms walked with two outs and Ashley Smetter followed with a base hit, but NU was unable to score.

Nebraska stranded two more runners in the fifth before Colorado State took a 3-1 lead on Hailey Smith’s two-run home run in the top of the sixth inning.

In the bottom of the inning, Nebraska loaded the bases with no outs on an error and consecutive singles from Caitlynn Neal and Bella Bacon. CSU responded with two straight outs before Ava Bredwell lined a clutch two-out, two-run single to right to tie the game at 3-3.

After the Rams were retired in order in the top of the seventh, Peyton Cody doubled off the wall in left on the first pitch of the bottom of the inning. On the very next pitch, Gray lined an RBI double off the wall in right to score pinch runner Alina Felix with the winning run.

Bredwell paced the Husker offense with a 2-for-4 day that included two RBIs. Andrews also had two hits – including her home run. In the circle, Jordy Bahl earned the win in relief, allowing two runs in two innings with three strikeouts. Sarah Harness started and was charged with just a single unearned run in 5.0 innings, and she struck out four batters.

Game 2: Nebraska 5, Colorado State 4Nebraska scored five runs in the first two inningsto take a 5-1 lead and then held on for a 5-4 victory to complete the doubleheader sweep and a perfect 4-0 weekend.

In the top of the first inning, two slow-rolling infield singles and an error loaded the bases for Colorado State with one out. Bahl responded with a strikeout before a bases-loaded walk brought in the game’s first run. A strikeout then prevented further damage.

Nebraska answered back in the bottom of the first. A one-out walk to Ava Bredwell was followed by a single from Bahl. Peyton Cody then lined an RBI single off the top of the wall in left center to tie the game. Sydney Gray gave Nebraska a 2-1 advantage with a sacrifice fly to left that scored Jordy Bahl.

The Huskers scored three more runs in the bottom of the second. The inning began with a Katelyn Caneda single followed by a walk to Bella Bacon. Samantha Bland then lined a 2-0 pitch to the gap in left center for an RBI single that stretched the Husker lead to 3-1. With runners on second and third and no outs, Colorado State made a pitching change and two batters later, Bredwell made it 4-1 with an RBI ground out that scored pinch runner Alina Felix. Bahl then lined a two-out RBI single to right to bring Bland home and push the lead to 5-1.

Colorado State got a run back in the top of the third on a single, a ground out that moved the runner to second base and an RBI single.

The Rams pulled to within 5-4 with a two-run fourth inning that featured two Husker errors.

Caitlin Olensky closed out the win with 3.0 innings of one-hit relief, and she struck out a pair of batters. Olensky earned the save in relief of Bahl, who allowed four runs (one earned) over the first 4.0 innings.

Offensively, Bahl, Caneda and Bland each finished 2-for-3 with Bahl and Bland adding one RBI each.

The Huskers scored a finish in each half while keeping the Gophers scoreless, as the Nebraska soccer team defeated Minnesota 2-0 on the road, Sunday afternoon.&nbsp;

The win over the Gophers marked the Huskers’ fourth-straight conference victory, and NU’s 11 wins on the season ties for the most since 2016, when the team qualified for the NCAA Tournament. With the 2-0 defeat, Nebraska improved to 11-2-3 (5-1-2 Big Ten), while Minnesota fell to 6-5-4 (2-4-2 Big Ten).&nbsp;

Weber started where she left off and continued her strong offensive attack as she recorded the first shot for either team in the fifth minute hitting the crossbar. Then in the 16th minute, Weber tallied her ninth finish of the season off a free kick from Nicola Hauk. Hauk drove the free kick into the 18-yard box, which was met by the Minnesota defense. Weber then gathered the ball off a header from the defense and shot the ball into the back right corner of the net.&nbsp;

Weber is now third in the conference standings in goals scored and second in both shots and shots on goal behind fellow Husker Eleanor Dale.&nbsp;

At the half, the Huskers led 1-0 overall and held the advantage in shots (7-5) and shots on goal (4-1).&nbsp;

The Huskers then extended their lead to 2-0 in the 52nd minute as Florence Belzile scored her third goal of the season. Gwen Lane, off a driving pass from Dale through the Gopher defense, sent a pass to Belzile in the goal box who found the back of the net past the Minnesota goalie. Dale’s assist brought her total points on the season to 46, good for first in the conference and second nationally.&nbsp;

The Gophers were aggressive and had chances to get on the board, but the Husker defense held steady to earn NU’s fifth shutout of the season.

Overall, Minnesota led in shots (16-10) and corners (11-0), but Nebraska had the advantage in shots on goal (6-2). Five Huskers recorded shots, led by Dale (4), Weber (2) and Belzile (2). Abbey Schwarz and Sadie Waite tallied a shot apiece.&nbsp;

In the goal, senior Sami Hauk played the entire game, earned her 22nd career win and recorded two saves. Hauk was joined by Lauryn Anglim, Dale, Nicola Hauk and Haley Peterson who also played 90 minutes.&nbsp;

Kelli Ann Strand earned her second career Big Ten Women's Golfer of the Week award on Wednesday, Oct. 11, after finishing as the runner-up at the Dale McNamara Invitational earlier in the week.

The conference chose Strand for its weekly honor after the sophomore from Challis, Idaho, produced the second-best performance of her career in Oklahoma. Strand closed with a three-round total of 206 (-10) on the par-72, 6,246-yard layout at the Golf Club of Oklahoma in Broken Arrow. Her effort included a season-best 66 (-6) in the second round and first- and third-round scores of 70 (-2). She notched an eagle on the par-5, 484-yard 18th hole in the final round.&nbsp;

An All-Big Ten golfer for the Huskers as a true freshman in 2022-23, Strand set the school record with her 72.05 stroke average on the season. Through nine rounds as a sophomore, Strand leads Nebraska with a 71.11 stroke average.

In 16 career collegiate tournaments, Strand owns 11 top-25 individual finishes, including seven top-10 showings.

Strand and the Huskers will be back in action to close the fall season at the Landfall Tradition in Wilmington, N.C. (Oct. 27-29).

Strand’s award was the 16th Big Ten Athlete-of-the-Week honor claimed by the Huskers across all sports during the fall season, including the third in the past three days, including Lindsey Krause (Volleyball) and Eleanor Dale (Soccer).

Football coaches poll for week of Oct. 9th

Red overcame an early two-run deficit in the series finale of Nebraska baseball’s Red-White Series to clinch the series with a 9-4 win on Wednesday afternoon at Hawks Field at Haymarket Park.

Red scored nine runs on six hits, while White had four runs on 10 hits and three errors.

Jalen Worthley had the start on the mound for Red, allowing two runs on five hits with three strikeouts and two walks in 2.2 innings of work. Evan Borst collected the win after surrendering one run on three hits in 2.1 innings. Brett Sears allowed one run in one inning, while Kyle Perry tossed a scoreless inning with a pair of strikeouts.

White’s Caleb Clark pitched three innings in the start, giving up four runs, two earned, on two hits with two strikeouts and four walks. Casey Daiss suffered the loss after allowing three runs, two earned, on one hit in 2.1 innings. JC Gutierrez and Will Rizzo recorded one out each in the final inning.

Red’s Dylan Carey was 2-for-3 at the plate with a home run, two RBI and two runs scored. Will Walsh and Aaron Manias recorded a hit and two RBI each, while Clay Bradford and Bryce Hughes had one hit.

Garrett Anglim had a 2-for-4 afternoon with a double and two RBI to lead the White offense. Joshua Overbeek and Max Buettenback turned in two-hit performances with one double each, while Cayden Brumbaugh and Hayden Lewis tallied a hit. Will Jesske was 1-for-4 with a home run, two RBI and a run scored.

White opened the scoring in the second after Overbeek reached on a one-out double to right-center, and Jesske blasted a two-run homer 376 feet down the left-field line.

Hughes began the bottom of the third with a single to right and advanced to third with back-to-back groundouts to second base. Carey locked the game at two with a 336-foot two-run home run into the bullpen in right.

White took back the lead in the top of the fourth after consecutive two-out singles from Brumbaugh and Anglim gave the visitors on the scoreboard a 3-2 advantage.

The Red offense responded immediately, plating three runs without a hit and two White errors to claim a 5-3 lead after four innings. Ben Columbus and Rhett Stokes reached on walks to start the inning, while Bradford loaded the bases on a throwing error on the sacrifice bunt attempt. Manias reached on a fielding error that plated Columbus and Stokes, while a sacrifice bunt by Riley Silva scored Bradford to make it a 5-3 game.

White trimmed the deficit in half after Anglim’s first-pitch RBI double to left scored Brumbaugh to bring White within 5-4 in the sixth.

The Red offense answered quickly, blowing the game open with four runs on four hits and an error to take a commanding 9-4 lead into the final inning. Stokes started the inning being plunked on a 2-0 pitch and scored on Bradford’s RBI double to right. A one-out RBI single from Manias brought home Bradford while Walsh’s two-RBI single to right later in the inning had White out front by five.

Perry worked around a two-out double down the left-field line by Buettenback to clinch the 9-4 win for White.

Red takes series with 9-4 win in finale

The Nebraska women’s gymnastics team released its 2024 schedule on Wednesday, Oct. 11. It features five home meets at the Bob Devaney Sports Center amongst 14 competitions.

NU will open its season with an away meet at Iowa State in Ames, Iowa, on Friday, Jan. 5. The Huskers will then travel to Salt Lake City, Utah, to take on Arizona, North Carolina and Boise State starting at 8 p.m. (CT) on Friday, Jan. 12.

The Huskers are set to face Illinois at 6:30 p.m. (CT) in their home debut on Saturday, Jan. 20. The Big Red will host the Michigan Wolverines in the second home meet of the season on Saturday, Jan. 27 at 3 p.m. (CT).

NU will go back on the road for two matches – Sunday, Feb. 4 against Iowa and Saturday, Feb. 10 against Maryland – before returning home to face off with Penn State at 7 p.m. (CT) on Saturday, Feb. 17.&nbsp;

The Huskers will travel to State College, Pa., to compete in the Big Fives meet featuring Michigan State, Minnesota, Nebraska, Ohio State and Rutgers. The Big Red will compete in Session 1 on Friday, Feb. 23.

NU will compete against North Carolina for the second time in the season at the Bob Devaney Sports Center on Sunday, March 3, at 1 p.m. (CT). The meet will also feature Southeast Missouri State and Illinois State.

Four Huskers produced top-25 individual performances to power the Nebraska men’s golf team to a fifth-place finish in a 15-team field at the Purdue Fall Invitational on Tuesday in West Lafayette, Ind.

The Big Red finished with a season-best, three-round team total of 855 (+3), just two strokes back of No. 9 Illinois, which tied for third at 853 (+1) with No. 79 VCU. The hosts from No. 40 Purdue claimed the team title after firing the tournament's best round with a 275 (-9) on Tuesday. The Boilermakers finished at 842 (-10) to secure a one-shot win over No. 84 Illinois State in second at 843 (-9).&nbsp;

The No. 87 Huskers, who continue to climb in the national standings, finished three shots ahead of No. 54 UNLV and nine strokes in front of No. 85 Ball State among the seven top-100 teams in the tournament field.

Harry Crockett, a junior from Oxted, England, wrapped up his best tournament of the season with a final-round 71 to close at even-par 213 to tie for 12th in the tournament after an opening-round 70 (-1) and a second-round 72 on Monday. Crockett's effort came on a par-71, 7,275-yard layout at the Ackerman-Allen Golf Course.

Sophomore Quinn Yost &nbsp;(Farmington, N.M.) and junior Hamish Murray (Sydney, Australia) finished right behind Crockett with one-over-par scores of 214 to tie for 17th.&nbsp;

Murray matched Crockett for Nebraska's best final-round score with a 71, to follow his rounds of 73 and 70 on Monday. Yost, who fired a 68 (-3) in Monday's second round, added a 72 on Tuesday to close another impressive tournament.

Senior Gentry Scheve (Emporia, Kan.) rounded out the four Huskers in the top 25 by tying for 21st overall at 215. Scheve entered the day tied for eighth at 140 (-2) and played an outstanding front nine to move to three-under-par, ran into trouble on the back.&nbsp;

Reed Malleck (York, Neb.) completed the Husker contingent with a 77 on Tuesday to close at 222 (+9) in a tie for 54th.

Jackson Buchanan (Illinois) and Valentin Peugnet (Illinois State) shared individual medalist honors with 54-hole scores of 204 (-9).

Nebraska returns to action at the Little Rock Invitational (Oct. 15-16) to complete the fall season.

The Tri-City Storm&nbsp;has announced a transaction the organization has completed with the Omaha Lancers. The Storm has acquired a 3rd&nbsp;Round draft pick in the 2025 USHL Phase II Draft from the Lancers in exchange for defenseman Samo&nbsp;Meritähti, and a 10th&nbsp;Round draft pick in the 2025 USHL Phase II Draft.

Samo Meritähti, 20, Defenseman, of Seinäjoki, Finland, was selected 288th&nbsp;overall by the Storm in the 19th&nbsp;Round of the 2022 USHL Phase II Draft. He made his debut for the organization on Thursday, September 22nd, 2022, in the Storm’s 4-1 win over the Madison Capitols at the 2022 DICK’S Sporting Goods USHL Fall Classic. Meritähti netted his first career goal for the Storm on Saturday, December 17th, 2022, in Tri-City’s 5-2 home win over the Lincoln Stars at the Viaero Center. He scored the game-winning goal for the Storm on Saturday, March 4th, 2023, in Tri-City’s 7-1 home victory over the Sioux Falls Stampede. Meritähti skated in all four of the Storm’s games during the team’s run in the 2023 Clark Cup Playoffs. He appeared in four of Tri-City’s six games played to this point in the 2023-2024 regular season. Meritähti scored three goals, and notched four assists, for seven total points in sixty-one career regular season games with the Storm. He previously announced a commitment to play college hockey in the future for Providence College.

Storm announces transaction with Lancers

The Nebraska baseball team held its opening game of the annual Red-White Series on Monday afternoon, with the White squad picking up a 7-3 win in seven innings at Hawks Field at Haymarket Park.

White had seven runs on 11 hits and an error, while Red scored three runs on five hits and committed an error.

Ty Horn earned the win on the mound after allowing three runs on three hits with three strikeouts and two walks in 3.1 innings. Kyle Froehlich tossed 2.2 one-hit shutout innings with a pair of strikeouts, while Casey Daiss allowed just one hit in an inning of work.

Red’s Ryan Harrahill took the loss, surrendering four runs on six hits with pair of strikeouts and two walks in three innings of action. Brett Sears gave up two runs on two hits in one inning, followed by a scoreless frame by Kyle Perry. Rans Sanders allowed a run in the sixth, while Carson Jasa tossed a scoreless seventh frame.

Tyler Stone had a 2-for-3 day with a home run, two RBI, one walk and a run scored for the White squad. Max Buettenback went 2-for-3 with a double, two RBI, one walk and a run. Will Jesske and Gabe Swansen turned in two-hit performances, while Cayden Brumbaugh, Joshua Overbeek and Dylan Hufft had one hit apiece.

Red’s Dylan Carey turned in a 2-for-4 afternoon with a solo home run. Ben Columbus went 1-for-3 with a double, while Rhett Stokes and Aaron Manias recorded one hit each.

Red wasted no time getting on the board after Carey’s 378-foot solo homer into the left-field berm in the bottom of the first.

Consecutive doubles from Buettenback and Jesske to begin the top of the second locked the game at one, while Hayden Lewis’ RBI groundout plated Jesske to give White the 2-1 advantage.

The lead for White didn’t last long, as Red plated a pair of runs off two hits and an error to grab a 3-2 after two innings. Red opened the inning with a single by Stokes and a four-pitch walk to Clay Bradford, while Manias’ RBI single through the right side scored Stokes to tie the game at two. An RBI fielder’s choice from Riley Silva brought home Bradford to make it a 3-2 game.

White took back the lead in the top of the third with a pair of runs on two hits. Swansen reached on a walk, joined by Overbeek’s double to left-center that placed runners on second and third. Buettenback followed with a two-RBI single that ricocheted off the first-base bag to score Swansen and Overbeek.

White doubled up Red with another two runs in the fourth frame to stretch the lead to 6-3 after four innings. Brumbaugh reached on a one-out walk, before Stone blasted a 428-foot two-run homer out of the park in right-center.

The White squad tacked on one more run in the sixth after Hufft singled to right and later came around to score on Swansen’s two-out RBI single to left to clinch the 7-3 victory.

The Red-White Series continues tomorrow afternoon at 2:30 p.m. at Hawks Field.

Hall of Fame coach Bill Maxwell passed away peacefully early Monday morning at the age of 80.

Maxwell dedicated his life to track and field, spending over 50 years working with the some of collegiate's best sprinters, jumpers and hurdlers with stints at Texas, LSU, Tennessee and Nebraska.&nbsp; In 1996, Maxwell made the move to Lincoln where he would spend the next 22 years as a Cornhusker.&nbsp; Maxwell went on to lead the Cornhuskers to 47 first-team All-Americans, 34 Conference Champions and three National Champions.&nbsp; Arguably seen as one of the top recruiters in the nation, Maxwell could be found making friendships across the globe with some of the top talent of his time.&nbsp; Throughout his career, Maxwell coached a total of 28 NCAA Individual Champions and more than 350 All-Americans.

Maxwell received numerous honors throughout his career including four Midwest Region Assistant Coach of the Year awards and was inducted into the USTFCCCA (United States Track &amp; Field Cross Country Coaches Association) Hall of Fame in 2015.

Fellow USTFCCCA Hall of Fame inductee and former Head Coach Gary Pepin remembers Maxwell as a “hard-nosed coach who had a heart of gold, who absolutely loved the kids that he coached.&nbsp; He was a tremendous member of our staff and lots of the success that our program had throughout his time here can be contributed to the success of the areas in which Coach Maxwell worked with.”

A native of Cairo, Ga., Maxwell received his bachelor’s degree from Florida State and began his coaching career at Columbia (Ga.) High School.&nbsp;

Gentry Scheve fired a second-round 67 to lead three Huskers among the top 20 to help the Nebraska men's golf team to third place in the team standings after the first day at the Purdue Fall Invitational.

Scheve, a senior from Emporia, Kan., charged into the top 10 during Monday's second round by recording seven birdies and eight pars to go with three bogeys on the par-71, 7,275-yard layout at the Ackerman-Allen Golf Course in West Lafayette, Ind.

Scheve's 67 (-4) followed an opening-round 73 (+2) to send him to the final round in a seven-way tie for eighth individually at 140 (-2).

Sophomore Quinn Yost (Farmington, N.M.) and junior Harry Crockett (Oxted, England) joined Scheve among the top 20 golfers in the 84-player field, as they finished the day at even-par 142 in a tie for 19th.

Yost nearly matched Scheve in the second round, carding a 68 (-3) with four birdies, 13 pars and a single bogey. Yost's second round came on the heels of an opening-round 75.

Crockett gave Nebraska its best opening round of the day with a 70 (-1), before adding a 72 in the second round.&nbsp;

Hamish Murray (Sydney, Australia) continued to play solid golf in his third consecutive appearance in the Nebraska lineup. Murray bounced back from a pair of first-round double bogeys with an eagle on the 547-yard par-5 16th hole. He sits in a tie for 27th at 143 (73-70) entering Tuesday's final round.&nbsp;

Senior Reed Malleck (York, Neb.) added strong scores of his own with an opening-round 74 (+3) before an even-par 71 in the second round. He heads to the final round tied for 37th at 145 (+3).&nbsp;

Nebraska's solid opening-day efforts have the Huskers hunting for the title in a 15-team field that features seven teams among the top 90 nationally in the most recent Golfstat rankings. The Huskers, who have climbed to No. 87 in the rankings, sit alone in third at 566 (-2) through 36 holes. NU is six shots back of co-leaders Illinois State and Northern Illinois (560). The Big Red own a one stroke lead over Central Arkansas, VCU and the hosts from Purdue in a tie for fourth.

Nebraska enters the final round with a three-shot edge over No. 9 Illinois.

Huskers in hunt at Purdue

Kelli Ann Strand unleashed a spectacular round of 66 (-6) to storm to the top of the leader board through 36 holes at the Dale McNamara Invitational on Monday.

Strand, a sophomore from Challis, Idaho, recorded six birdies to go with 12 pars in Monday's second round on the par-72, 6,246-yard layout at the Golf Club of Oklahoma in Broken Arrow. It followed an opening-round 70 (-2) for Strand that included five birdies, 10 pars and three bogeys.

The All-Big Ten golfer closed the day at 136 (-8) to sit in a tie for first with South Florida's Melanie Green, who carded rounds of 72 and 64. The second rounds for Green and Strand were the best rounds of the day among the 86 golfers in the field.

Strand helped the Huskers to a tie for fifth in the 14-team field through the first 36 holes at 583 (+7). Nebraska bounced back from an opening-round 301 (+13) for a 282 (-6) in the second round, which was the second-best round of the day for any team, trailing only South Florida's second-round 279.

The hosts from Tulsa own the top position in the team standings at 568 (-8), following rounds of 283 and 285. South Florida sits three shots back at 571, while Colorado State is third at 573 (-3). UTSA enters the final round in fourth at 574 (-2), while the Huskers sit in a tie with Sam Houston State in a tie for fifth at 583 (+7).
