The 22nd-ranked Western Colorado Mountaineers won the tie breaker to get past the Nebraska Kearney “B” team,&nbsp;<a href="https://www.trackwrestling.com/tw/seasons/LoadBalance.jsp?seasonId=170449138&amp;pageName=DualMatches.jsp&amp;dualId=7429187132" target="_blank">22-21</a>, Thursday night in Gunnison.

This was the regular season opener for UNK. It’s a busy weekend for the Lopers as the 18th-ranked varsity is in California to dual San Francisco State (Sat.) and Division I Stanford (Sun.) with younger team members headed to Mitchell, S.D., Saturday for the Dakota Wesleyan Open.

To edge the Lopers, WCU (1-1) scored more points in matches not decided by fall (two), 61-59. Each team also had a tech fall and each won five matches.

UNK tied things up at 20 after redshirt sophomore heavyweight&nbsp;Jake Boley&nbsp;(Colorado Springs) stuck Tommy Tatham in 1:26 and redshirt freshman&nbsp;Tre Daro&nbsp;(David City) had four points in the third period to win at 197 pounds, 11-8.

The Lopers got out to an 11-3 lead as redshirt sophomores&nbsp;Bishop Murray&nbsp;(Topeka, Kan.) and&nbsp;Brody Arrants&nbsp;(Grand Island) had wins by decision with redshirt sophomore&nbsp;Daniel DeRosier&nbsp;(Bellevue East) racking up nine third period points to have a 16-0 tech fall in 6:39. &nbsp;

The Mountaineers moved ahead 20-14 after getting wins from nationally-ranked Patrick Allis (133 1bs.) and Cole Hernandez (174 lbs.) with Ryan Wilson (157 lbs.) and Cole Gray (184 lbs.) rallying from first period deficits to win by decision.

Busy opening weekend for the Lopers

*-Rienk Mast collected his 19th career double-double with 20 points and 16 rebounds. Mast nearly had a double-double in the first half alone with 12 points and eight rebounds. Prior to tonight, the last Husker to have at least 20 points and 15 rebounds in a game was Aleks Maric, who had 32 points and 16 rebounds against Missouri on Feb. 13, 2008.&nbsp; Mast had Nebraska’s first double-double since Sam Griesel (16/12) against Minnesota (3/8/23),

*-Mast’s 16 rebounds was the most by a Husker since Yvan Ouedraogo had 19 rebounds against Northwestern on March 1, 2020, and the second-highest rebound total in Hoiberg’s four-plus seasons at Nebraska.

On the physicality and emphasis on rebounds

‘Yeah I thought the defensive edge was really good tonight. It is what we really stress the last couple of days in practice was the physicality. I thought we got beat to some 50-50 balls in the opener and gave up way too many offensive rebounds. From that standpoint,&nbsp;I was very pleased. Offensively we obviously weren’t very good tonight.&nbsp;Turning the ball over 18 times shooting 41 percent. In the first half I thought we took way too many contested shots in the paint. We do a drill every day where we drive it into the paint and come to a two-foot jump stop and kick it to the guy pulling up behind. We weren’t talking on it. We were trying to go up and finish over length. It wasn’t working. In the second half, it was a big point of emphasis at halftime to play under control and then we had layups and wide-open plays at the rim and now we decide to start kicking them out. We should have to be better. We have to be more efficient in the paint. We still score 81 points, missing 11 free throws,&nbsp;shooting 41 percent and turning the ball over 18 times. We have a chance to be a very good offensive team, a very good team overall if we can take what we did on the defensive end tonight and then take care of the basketball and get a quality possession every time down. We have a chance to be very good if we can figure that out which is going to be a big part of practice the next few days. We have a huge week ahead. Three tough games and we need to have two quality days of work on Saturday and Sunday.”&nbsp;

“That’s pretty good company. Aleks Maric was a monster. Rienk was the guy that really got it going early for us. I thought our guys did a good job finding him. Josiah (Allick) was just a read on his part where he curled, Rienk’s guy was in the paint to pop him out for an open three after he just made one. I love to see that when guys make a shot and have a conscious effort of finding that guy the next time down. Rienk was phenomenal tonight. I thought he did rush a couple in the paint that he could have kicked out but overall yeah with 20 points and 16 rebounds in 27 minutes is a pretty darn good night.”

On the injuries and how they’ve impacted the team

“It’s giving guys great opportunities to go out there and play extended minutes. It’s given Eli (Rice) a chance to get out there and show what he can do. I talk to the guys all the time about taking advantage when it presents itself. With Keisei (Tominaga) being out of the lineup, we have been able to play some different combinations out there, obviously starting big. Juwan (Gary) hopefully we’ll be getting him back sometime next week and have a full team out there. Then we’re gonna have some decisions to make on who’s gonna be in the rotation. You can’t play 12 guys. It doesn’t work that way. I think we use the example of Jamarques (Lawrence) and Sam (Hoiberg). A year ago they didn’t play a lot early in the season. Sam didn’t play at all. And now obviously he’s a very important guy on the floor on both ends. He knows what we needs to do defensively and offensively for the most part, he does his job. When those guys get back, I’m excited. It’s gonna have to be a group that goes out there and continues to play unselfishly but getting Keisei back is going to be very important to us.”

“The last game we weren’t too happy with the way we boxed out so that was a big emphasis in practice these last couple of days. I think we did a lot better overall with everyone being more physical and just crashing harder and putting effort into rebounding. You see that once we put effort into it we can do it. We got to sustain it through the next couple of days.”

“Getting everyone back. We hope Keisei (Tominaga) will be back soon. Not rushing him but it’s looking good. He’s already moving better doing parts in practice. Getting everybody back together. We have a lot of veteran guys. You see the potential. I think today you saw potential. We beat this team pretty handily,&nbsp;and we still had&nbsp;18 turnovers and shot 41 percent from the field. Not a great game on our part,&nbsp;but we see the potential once we have Keisei back.”&nbsp;

“It varies between different teams but when you play together you start to learn each other’s tendencies: where you like the ball and what they’re good at. When you get out there on the court you just try to do what you’re good at. You don’t try to do too much or not enough. It will happen quick just because of the way we play is really very free-flowing. It’s not anybody being asked to do anything they can’t do. It will happen pretty fast once you get out there.”

“We talked about the same emphasis, running them off the line, playing with great awareness, I think we did a better job of contesting (in the second half), and some of them they got some open looks and just missed.”

The No. 10 Nebraska rifle team (3-3) will travel to Morgantown, W.V., to take on No. 2 West Virginia, No. 6 Murray State and No. 7 Air Force this weekend.

The teams will compete in the smallbore on Saturday and the air rifle on Sunday. Both days are set to start at 7:30 a.m. (CT) and fans can follow along with live results&nbsp;<a href="https://results.megalink.no/#!/" target="_blank">here</a>.

“The Fall Classic will be structured like the NCAA Championships,” Head Coach Mindy Miles said. “Morgantown will host the NCAAs so this weekend’s match will give the team a chance to dry run for the championships.”

Most recently, the Huskers faced off against No. 18 The Citadel on Nov. 4, and won by a score of 4,704-4,632. There, four Nebraska athletes finished in the top five overall.

NU is 3-3 on the season so far with wins coming against No. 7 Air Force, No. 11 Ohio State and the No. 18 Bulldogs. They have shot program-bests in both the team aggregate (4,728, at Air Force) and air rifle (2,384, at Air Force).&nbsp;

Four team members – senior Cecelia Ossi, junior Mackenzie Strauch, sophomore Tori Watts and freshman Charlie Mick – have shot a career best in at least one event this season. The Fall Classic is the last match of the fall portion of the Huskers’ season.&nbsp;

“I frequently tell the team that we need to find how to be consistent,” Miles said. “We fluctuate a lot with our team scores and it makes it hard to gain confidence for them. We have seen a lot of improvements in practice and I believe where the problem lies is when we change to a match, where pressure is added. They have done a good job of posting personal bests, but they haven't quite gotten it all together, minus our appearance at USAFA.”

Nebraska has already competed against WVU this year, and lost by scores of 4,748-4,699 and 4,732-4,722 on Oct. 28 and 29. The Mountaineers are undefeated on the season and average an aggregate score of 4,744.17. They have wins against No. 1 TCU, No. 8 Memphis, No. 9 Ole Miss and No. 12 Akron.

The Racers have grabbed wins against No. 11 Ohio State, No. 19 UT Martin and UTEP and lost to No. 9 Ole Miss and No. 15 Morehead State. They have an average aggregate score of 4,690 this season. NU has not faced Murray State this season.

NU defeated the Falcons earlier this year, behind program-record aggregate (4,728) and air rifle (2,384) scores and numerous personal bests. Air Force has defeated No. 13 Navy, No. 14 Army and UTEP and has taken losses against the Huskers and No. 1 TCU. They average an aggregate score of 4,717.80.

Up next, Nebraska will take a break for the winter and return to action at Kentucky on Jan. 14.

Huskers travel to fall classic to face three Top-10 teams

The No. 9 Nebraska wrestling team looks to continue its early-season success this week when Campbell visits the Devaney Center on Friday night. The dual, which will be streamed on Big Ten Plus, marks the second-straight season the teams have squared off against one another on the mat. The Huskers defeated the Camels 37-6 on the road in 2022-23. &nbsp;

Last Time Out:&nbsp;The Huskers dominated North Dakota State, recording five bonus-point victories to defeat NDSU (0-1, 0-0 Big 12) 31-12 on Saturday afternoon.&nbsp;

Nebraska Kearney head wrestling coach&nbsp;Dalton Jensen&nbsp;announced today that&nbsp;Cadyn Coyle&nbsp;of Bennington will hit the mats for the Lopers next season.

UNK has just five seniors on this year’s team in All-Americans Billy Higgins (184 lbs.) and Nick James (141 lbs.), national qualifier John Burger (149 lbs.) and brothers Jacari (184 lbs.) and Jacobi (174 lbs.) Deal.

Coyle was the 2023 Class B state champion at 113 pounds, helping the Badgers finish as state runners up. As a sophomore, Bennington won its first state title in 15 years with Coyle the runner up at 106 pounds. Out of the high school season, Coyle was a 2023 Fargo Junior Greco-Roman National Champion.

"We are beyond excited to have Cadyn join the Loper Wrestling Family,” said Jensen. “He comes from a rich wrestling family and has proven success on the national stage.&nbsp; His passion for the sport paired with his work ethic shows great potential for his future."

She leads the country in total goals (25), game-winning goals (8), goals per game (1.25), while also leading the conference in shots (120), shots on goal (61) and points (54). Dale’s total goals and points are the most in the Big Ten since 2001 (Christie Welsh, Penn State, 25 goals, 68 points).&nbsp;</li><li>Dale, who has tallied 10 braces this season, is third on Nebraska’s season goal scored list. She trails only Kim Engesser, who scored 27 goals in 1998 and 26 goals in 1997. Additionally, she is tied for first in the Huskers record books in game-winning goals and her total shots this season place her at the top of the list. &nbsp;</li><li>Gretna’s Sarah Weber joins Dale as a first-team All-Big Ten honoree as Weber captured her second-straight first-team All-Big Ten status. Huskers host Jackrabbits in NCAA first round 

The Nebraska softball team signed four players to National Letters of Intent on Wednesday. The group includes two in-state players and two players from California.

Nebraska’s signing class features Natalia Hill (Norwalk, Calif.), Nessa McMillen (Blair, Neb.), Macie Vickers (Escalon, Calif.) and Kennadi Williams (Lincoln, Neb.). All four players will join Nebraska next fall.

“We are proud to announce another high character, high achievement-oriented group of student-athletes to represent the University of Nebraska and our softball program,” Head Coach Rhonda Revelle said. “The 2024 class is athletic with a combination of speed and power offensively, while also displaying versatility on defense as they all play multiple positions.&nbsp;

“It is a great day to be a Husker as we welcome this competitive group of scholar-athletes to the Red Team.”

Natalia Hill, Utility, Norwalk, Calif. (Gahr HS/Briggs Softball Club – Bengals)

Natalia Hill was one of the nation’s top recruits while starring for Gahr High School and the Briggs Softball Club in California. Hill was ranked among the top 50 overall recruits in the country and was invited to play in the Minority Prospects All-American Game.

Hill has been a starter every season for Gahr High School in Cerritos, Calif., with her senior season still to come this spring. As a sophomore, she was named the team’s defensive player of the year and was a first-team all-league selection. She repeated as a first-team all-league player as a junior and was also Gahr’s Most Valuable Player. She earned recognition at the state level with an appointment to the Cal-Hi Sports All-State Underclass team as a junior, when she was also an all-area selection and a member of the All-CIF Southern Section Division I team.

Hill has excelled in the classroom as an honor roll member since the 7th grade and as a four-year Scholar Athlete of the Quarter recipient.

Hill has also enjoyed success for the Briggs Softball Club – Bengals. She helped her team to a title at the 2023 PGF Shootout championship, hitting a home run in the semifinal game. Hill was invited to play in the All-Star Jennie Finch Classic in 2023, when she helped her team to a tournament title. She also participated for Team Spain at the 2023 International Challenge, where she earned a spot on the All World team.

Coach Revelle on Natalia:&nbsp;“Nat has an incredible softball IQ that impressed us the first time we spoke with her.&nbsp;On the field, Nat is dynamic with her leadership, voice and level of play.&nbsp;An intense competitor, Nat&nbsp;has a contagious energy and a winning attitude, and we could not be more grateful that Nat is a Husker.”

Hill on Nebraska:&nbsp;“During my recruitment&nbsp;process I was looking for a school that felt like a second home.&nbsp;As soon as I stepped onto the Nebraska campus, I felt that. Considering&nbsp;that I will be moving far away from California, having support like I get from Nebraska is a big thing I am grateful for.&nbsp; Seeing how well the athletes are treated, how welcoming the people were, how competitive&nbsp;and positive the softball team is, and being high on academics made it a no doubter. On top of that being able to play for one of the most experienced and knowledgeable coaching staffs in the country is truly a blessing.”

Nessa McMillen, Utility, Blair, Neb. (Blair HS/Aces)

Nessa McMillen was a four-year starter for Blair High School. She was a four-time all-conference selection who hit above .400 in each of her four seasons. McMillen was also an all-state selection each of her first three seasons with all-state honors still to be announced for her senior year.

As a freshman, she was Blair’s offensive MVP while earning honorable-mention all-state accolades. She hit .419 with 39 hits, 12 doubles, three triples, three home runs, 30 RBIs and eight stolen bases, leading the team in each category. In her sophomore season, McMillen was Blair’ offensive and defensive MVP and a second-team all-state selection. She tied the Nebraska all-class record with three home runs against Norris while leading Blair with a .469 average, 45 hits, 15 doubles, five home runs and 38 RBIs.

In her junior season, McMillen was a first-team all-state pick who helped Blair to a third-place finish at the state tournament. She led the team with a .451 average, 41 hits, 14 doubles, four triples, 40 runs and 28 RBIs. As a senior, McMillen led Blair to a runner-up finish, when McMillen had three hits and scored three runs in the state championship game. She broke the school record by scoring 63 runs and producing 59 RBIs while batting .538 with 57 hits, including 14 doubles, three triples and 13 home runs.

McMillen plays her club ball for the Kansas City Aces. She helped the Aces to a runner-up national finish at the 2023 Alliance Fastpitch Championship Series.

Coach Revelle on Nessa:&nbsp;“Nessa is another homegrown Husker who is very athletic and can impact the game with her speed or with her power.&nbsp;Nessa’s versatility will be so valuable to our team, as she can play many positions at a high level.&nbsp;We are absolutely thrilled that Nessa has chosen to stay home and wear red.”

McMillen on Nebraska:&nbsp;“I chose Nebraska because it made me feel the most welcomed and at home. The softball girls are truly amazing people, and I could see myself fitting in. The coaches made me feel like I was very valued from the first phone call. They care about me as a person even more than a player. On top of that, Nebraska athletes get the best of the best. They are given so many resources that other schools cannot provide. Women’s sports are also on the uprise in Nebraska. The engineering program was by far the best, and I knew they would ensure that I succeed after my time at Nebraska. Nebraska fans are amazing and continue to support game after game. Lastly, it’s close enough to home where I can still see my family a lot. Being able to represent my home state is something I’ve been so grateful for. I can’t wait to officially become a Husker.”

Macie Vickers, Catcher, Escalon, Calif. (Escalon HS/Love The Game – Henderson)

Macie Vickers is a talented athlete for Escalon High School in California. In addition to being a catcher for the softball team, Vickers also played volleyball and basketball, and she served as a captain for all three teams. Vickers played her club softball for LTG – Henderson.

On the softball diamond, Vickers will serve as a captain for the third time this spring for Escalon. A four-year member of the varsity team, Vickers has been an all-league selection in each of her first three seasons. She is also Escalon’s two-time offensive player of the year and an all-district selection. As a junior, Vickers was the Trans Valley League Offensive Player of the Year and an all-state nominee. She also made the watch list for the 2023 PGF Futures All-American Game.

Outside of softball, Vickers was captain of the Escalon volleyball and basketball teams. She was an all-league selection on the volleyball court and helped her team to back-to-back section championships. In basketball, Vickers was a four-year member of the varsity team and three-year captain. A two-time team MVP, Vickers was the 2022 league MVP and was named to the all-district team.

Coach Revelle on Macie:&nbsp;“Macie is a multi-sport athlete who has been a leader on every team she has ever played on, which as a catcher is an integral part of being excellent at her position.&nbsp;Macie has the ability to be an impact player both offensively and defensively.&nbsp;We are excited to have Macie don the scarlet and cream.”

Vickers on Nebraska:&nbsp;“I chose Nebraska because it felt like a home away from home. The second I stepped off the plane in Lincoln I knew this is where I wanted to spend the next four years. I loved how close the team was and how welcoming they were. When looking for a college I want it to resemble my hometown and that’s exactly what Nebraska did. It gave me the small-town feel and the whole community comes together to support athletics. By the end of my first visit the coaches made not only me but my parents feel as if we were joining a new family. I always try to pray and get clarity and see what God wants for my future and from day one I felt that’s where God wanted me.”

Kennadi Williams, Utility, Lincoln, Neb. (Southwest HS)

Kennadi Williams will play two sports at Nebraska, as she will be a member of the Husker women’s basketball team in addition to playing on the softball team. Williams starred in both sports for Lincoln Southwest High School.

On the softball diamond, Williams led all of Class A in runs scored as a senior, when she was named Lincoln Southwest’s team captain and best offensive player. Williams helped the Silver Hawks to the state semifinals in her senior season. She missed her junior season while recovering from an injury, but Williams was a key part of Southwest’s 2021 state championship team. That season, she hit .362 as the starting shortstop with six home runs, seven doubles and 29 RBIs. She was named the team’s most improved player and best defensive player. Williams was an honorable-mention all-state selection as a sophomore, while accolades from her senior season have yet to be announced.

On the basketball court, Williams was limited to late-season action in her junior campaign as she recovered from an injury. As a sophomore, Williams averaged 11.9 points, 3.2 assists and 3.0 steals per contest while earning second-team Super-State honors from the Lincoln Journal Star. Her play helped Southwest to a state runner-up finish.

Williams also played soccer for Lincoln Southwest. As a sophomore, Williams helped Southwest qualify for state in all three sports.

Kennadi is the daughter of Nebraska women’s basketball head coach Amy Williams. Amy (Gusso) Williams also played basketball for Nebraska from 1994 to 1998. Kennadi’s father, Lloyd, was also a college basketball player at UT San Antonio.

Coach Revelle on Kennadi:&nbsp;“Kennadi is an amazing competitor who only knows how to play the game one way—all out.&nbsp;In addition to being a gifted athlete, Kennadi has outstanding speed and is a constant threat on the base paths. Williams starred in both sports for Lincoln Southwest High School.On the softball diamond, Williams led all of Class A in runs scored as a senior, when she was named Lincoln Southwest’s team captain and best offensive player. Williams helped the Silver Hawks to the state semifinals in her senior season. She missed her junior season while recovering from an injury, but Williams was a key part of Southwest’s 2021 state championship team. That season, she hit .362 as the starting shortstop with six home runs, seven doubles and 29 RBIs. She was named the team’s most improved player and best defensive player. Williams was an honorable-mention all-state selection as a sophomore, while accolades from her senior season have yet to be announced.On the basketball court, Williams was limited to late-season action in her junior campaign as she recovered from an injury. As a sophomore, Williams averaged 11.9 points, 3.2 assists and 3.0 steals per contest while earning second-team Super-State honors from the Lincoln Journal Star. Her play helped Southwest to a state runner-up finish.Williams also played soccer for Lincoln Southwest. As a sophomore, Williams helped Southwest qualify for state in all three sports.Kennadi is the daughter of Nebraska women’s basketball head coach Amy Williams. Amy (Gusso) Williams also played basketball for Nebraska from 1994 to 1998. Nebraska Softball signs four talented players

Nebraska Head Coach Jeanne Sutherland will welcome three high school golfers from the Midwest for the 2024-25 season, after the Huskers announced their most recent women's golf signees on Wednesday.

Eden Lohrbach (Ames, Iowa) Bridget Butler (Barrington, Illinois) and Olivia Lovegrove (Lincoln, Nebraska) will join the Huskers next season after making their college plans official on Nov. 8.

Sutherland said all three student-athletes are high-character young people who love golf and want to get better every day at Nebraska.

Lohrbach was a three-time Iowa Girls High School Athletic Union Player of the Year at Gilbert High School prior to her spring golf season in 2024. A two-time IGHSAU Class 3A state champion (2021, 2023) and the Class 3A state runner-up in 2022, &nbsp;she was also the Class 2A co-ed state champion in 2022.&nbsp;

“Eden will make an immediate impact on our team. &nbsp;She loves the game of golf. She knows how to score, and plays her best when it matters most. She went undefeated this year in high school golf, and that speaks to her competitiveness and focus on the course. She is very excited to join the Huskers and do her best to help us win tournaments. Eden is a strong student and a good person on and off the course. We are thrilled that Eden chose to become a Husker.”

Lohrbach led Gilbert to a Class 3A state team title and an 86-0 head-to-head record in 2023 for Coach Grant Walker, after helping the Tigers to state runner-up finishes in 2021 and 2022. She also powered Gilbert to three consecutive conference and district championships in 2021, 2022 and 2023. Individually, Lohrbach was undefeated as a junior in 2023.

Lohrbach was the runner up at the Iowa Women’s Amateur in 2021, before finishing third at the state women’s amateur in both 2022 and 2023.

“I chose Nebraska because the coaching staff and the resources available for student-athletes are amazing," Lohrbach said. "Coach Sutherland has so much experience, I can’t wait to learn from her to help me grow as a person and player.”

Butler is a three-time all-conference and all-regional golfer at Barrington High School in Illinois. She helped the Broncos to the 2021 state team championship as a sophomore, while also leading the school to four consecutive conference and regional team titles.

"Bridget is a tremendous athlete who has the ability to grow into a leader at Nebraska and in the Big Ten,” Sutherland said. “She has a strong work ethic and the desire to help the Huskers win championships. Bridget has excelled at numerous sports and brings a strong team spirit and love of competition to the team. She will have the opportunity to help us very soon. She’s also strong in the classroom and a great person to have in our program.”

Butler, who was the 2022 individual regional champion, also won individual titles in 2023 at the Mike Rusk tournament, Conway Farms tournament and the Kevin Streelman Invitational.

A strong performer in the classroom, Butler was a member of National Honor Society in high school. She plans to major in sports media and communications at Nebraska.

“I chose Nebraska because of the high-level golf program, coaching staff and school spirit," Butler said. "The coaches were definitely a big part of why I decided on Nebraska. Not only that, but the team culture was certainly something I wanted to be a part of.”

Lovegrove, a senior at Lincoln Christian High School, was the 2022 Nebraska Class C state champion and the 2023 Class C state runner-up, after finishing fourth at state as both a freshman and sophomore. A four-time district champion, Lovegrove fired a Class C state record 65 on her way to the district title as a junior in 2022. &nbsp;A two-time conference champion, Lovegrove’s 66 in 2023 also set the conference record.

“Olivia has been a dominant player in Lincoln and the state of Nebraska this past year,” Sutherland said. “She loves Nebraska and has worked hard to be the best player she can be to help us be a better team. She is strong in the classroom and a wonderful person. We are looking forward to her being a Husker.”

The four-time all-state selection and three-time Super State pick was also the champion of all three Nebraska Junior Golf Spring Series events in 2023. She helped the Crusaders to a state runner-up finish as a freshman in 2020 and three district championships in 2020, 2022 and 2023.

An outstanding student, Lovegrove was a two-time member of National Honor Society and a two-time academic all-conference selection at LCS. She plans to major in business administration at Nebraska.

Huskers add three talented Midwest Golfers

The No. 3 Nebraska bowling team finalized its 2024 incoming freshman recruiting class, bringing in the nation's top prospective athletes to the Big Red roster including Haley Swindle, Karina Capron and Kayla Starr.

Kayla Starr, Crofton, MDStarr, a right-handed bowler from Crofton, Md., brings immense levels of experience to the Cornhusker bowling program. The bowler holds a top game of 300 and has demonstrated high performance levels at the Junior Gold championships. Starr earned runner-up honors at 2021 Junior Gold, while placing in the top five in 2022. She also finished second at the 2022 PBA Jr. Nationals and was a member of the 2022 Jr. Team USA Development Team. Starr also highlights her resume by being crowned a three-time Virginia State Pepsi Champion (2019, 2021, 2022).

“Kayla Starr is a tremendous player with a strong resume on the national scene,” Head Coach Klempa said. “She is a member of Team USA and has been a competitive player for years nationally. She is a great ambassador for the sport and will do the same for Husker Bowling. She comes from a supportive family and we are blessed to have her join our Husker Bowling family.”

Haley Swindle, Sharpsburg, Ga.A Sharpsburg, Ga., native, Haley Shae Swindle joins Starr in the 2024 recruiting class. The right-hander hails from East Coweta High School with a 4.0 GPA, High Honors and a powerful resume of her sport. Swindle holds a high game of 277, with a 741 high series. A Georgia Pepsi Champion and GYBT Tournament of Champions Champion, Swindle is also the 2022 Youth Open Champion, PBA Regional Jr. Champion, as well as a three-time Junior Gold Final Advancer. Along with bowling, Swindle also was a strong volleyball player at East Coweta, earning a high school letter.

“I chose Nebraska because I loved the campus and all the opportunities given to athletes, and I feel like it will give me the best education as well as prepare me the best to bowl professionally after college,” Swindle said. “I also loved the program, team and coaches, so I am very happy I will be spending my four years of college with them!”

“Haley Swindle is an excellent addition to our program,” Klempa said. “She comes from a very supportive family and has a solid competitive resume. Haley has been a top player on the national scene for years and she also excels in the classroom. Karina Capron, Fremont, Neb.A native of Fremont, Neb., Karina Capron rounded out the 2024 class. The right-hander’s commitment marks the first Nebraska-born recruit to the bowling program since the senior year of three-time All-American and daughter of legendary coach Bill Straub, Meghan Straub. Capron brings a deep and extensive resume full of high school and national experience. With a pair of 300 games, and a 796 high series, Capron is a Junior Team USA member, in addition to winning the U12 2017 Junior Gold Championship. She continued her success at Junior Gold earning runner-up honors in 2018 and 2023 with a 300 game during qualifying. Capron has proven to be a dominant force both locally and nationally, highlighted by being a seven-time Nebraska State Pepsi Champion, holding the championship for the past six years since 2016. Capron also holds herself among professionals in the nation by placing in the top 36/149 at the 2023 USA Team Trials.&nbsp;

Husker Bowling announce class of 2024 recruits

The No. 1 Nebraska volleyball team won its 24th match in a row with a 3-1 (28-26, 24-26, 25-11, 25-20) win over Northwestern in front of 8,637 fans at the Bob Devaney Sports Center on Wednesday night.&nbsp;

Nebraska improved to 24-0 (15-0 Big Ten), its best start to a season since 2005 (28-0). Northwestern dropped to 11-14 (5-10 Big Ten).&nbsp;

The Huskers hit .278 and held the Wildcats to .143, including .087 over the final three sets. Nebraska had 13 blocks on the night, including seven by Bekka Allick, six by Andi Jackson and five by Bergen Reilly.&nbsp;

Merritt Beason and Harper Murray each had 13 kills to lead the Big Red. Allick tied her season high with 11 kills and hit .562, and Ally Batenhorst also had double-digit kills with 10. Jackson chipped in eight kills on .600 hitting.&nbsp;

Reilly finished with 45 assists and 12 digs for her third straight double-double. Lexi Rodriguez had 11 digs, while Beason had 10.&nbsp;

Laney Choboy served two of Nebraska's four aces in the match.&nbsp;

Set 1:&nbsp;The Huskers held a 5-3 lead before Northwestern scored a 6-2 run to go up 9-7. The Wildcats led 12-10 when a kill by Murray and Wildcat attacking error tied the score at 12-12. A kill by Jackson put the Big Red back on top, 15-14, but Northwestern scored four straight points to go up 20-17. The Wildcats led 22-19, but a kill by Allick and Northwestern hitting error got Nebraska within 22-21. Beason then smashed back-to-back kills to put the Huskers up 23-22. A Northwestern kill tied the score at 23-23, but Beason stepped up with another kill for set point, 24-23. Northwestern answered again, but Batenhorst posted a kill for another set point, 25-24. Once again, the Wildcats fought it off with a kill, and a Husker hitting error gave Northwestern set point, 26-25. Beason terminated from the back row to make it 26-26, and Allick and Murray teamed up for a block and another Husker set point, 27-26. This time, Murray finished off the set with a kill for a 28-26 win.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Set 2:&nbsp;The Huskers jumped out to a 10-4 lead with two kills by Allick and two by Beason. But Northwestern rallied from down 13-7 with five straight points to get within one, 13-12. After a Murray kill, the Wildcats got a kill and a block to tie the score at 14-14. Beason and Allick combined for a block and a 15-14 lead, but the Wildcats scored five of the next six points to go up 19-16. A service error by Northwestern was followed by two Wildcat hitting errors to tie the score at 19-19. Murray tallied two kills around two Northwestern hitting errors for a 23-20 Husker lead.&nbsp; But the Wildcats answered with two kills, an ace and a block to claim set point at 24-23. Murray terminated for the Huskers to tie the score at 24-24, but Northwestern went back up 25-24 with a kill and won the set, 26-24, with a block.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Set 3:&nbsp;Murray had two kills, Allick had a solo block, and Reilly served an ace for a 4-0 Husker start. Back-to-back kills by Batenhorst and Jackson kept Nebraska up by four, 9-5, and an ace by Choboy helped the Huskers build the lead to 12-6. After Northwestern cut it to 12-8, Murray had a kill and Allick posted back-to-back blocks for a 16-8 lead. Allick added a kill and Batenhorst put down three straight kills as the Huskers increased their lead to 23-10. Allick tacked on one more kill, and Beason and Jackson combined for a block and a 25-11 win. The Huskers held the Wildcats to -.074 hitting in the set.&nbsp;

Set 4:&nbsp;The Huskers fell behind 8-3 before rallying with a 6-0 run to take a 9-8 lead. Batenhorst and Beason had kills, and then Jackson and Reilly combined for three blocks in a row before an ace by Choboy. Kills by Jackson and Allick put Nebraska ahead 11-9, and Nebraska went up 16-12 after kills by Murray, Allick and Batenhorst and an ace by Rodriguez. The Wildcats got within two, 17-15, after two Husker hitting errors, but blocks by Jackson and Reilly and Jackson and Murray made it 19-15. Beason and Allick pounded kills for a 23-16 lead, and Beason earned match point for the Huskers at 24-17 with a kill. Allick hammered back an overpass to complete the win, 25-20.&nbsp;

Up Next:&nbsp;The Huskers host Illinois on Sunday at 2 p.m. on Sunday at the Bob Devaney Sports Center.&nbsp;

Once again, the Wildcats fought it off with a kill, and a Husker hitting error gave Northwestern set point, 26-25. Beason terminated from the back row to make it 26-26, and Allick and Murray teamed up for a block and another Husker set point, 27-26. This time, Murray finished off the set with a kill for a 28-26 win.&nbsp;&nbsp;Set 2:&nbsp;The Huskers jumped out to a 10-4 lead with two kills by Allick and two by Beason. But Northwestern rallied from down 13-7 with five straight points to get within one, 13-12. After a Murray kill, the Wildcats got a kill and a block to tie the score at 14-14. Beason and Allick combined for a block and a 15-14 lead, but the Wildcats scored five of the next six points to go up 19-16. A service error by Northwestern was followed by two Wildcat hitting errors to tie the score at 19-19. Murray tallied two kills around two Northwestern hitting errors for a 23-20 Husker lead.&nbsp; But the Wildcats answered with two kills, an ace and a block to claim set point at 24-23. Murray terminated for the Huskers to tie the score at 24-24, but Northwestern went back up 25-24 with a kill and won the set, 26-24, with a block.&nbsp;&nbsp;Set 3:&nbsp;Murray had two kills, Allick had a solo block, and Reilly served an ace for a 4-0 Husker start. Back-to-back kills by Batenhorst and Jackson kept Nebraska up by four, 9-5, and an ace by Choboy helped the Huskers build the lead to 12-6. After Northwestern cut it to 12-8, Murray had a kill and Allick posted back-to-back blocks for a 16-8 lead. Allick added a kill and Batenhorst put down three straight kills as the Huskers increased their lead to 23-10. Allick tacked on one more kill, and Beason and Jackson combined for a block and a 25-11 win. Huskers battle past Wildcats, 3-1

The Nebraska volleyball program announced its 2024 signing class on National Letter of Intent Signing Day on Wednesday.&nbsp;

Head Coach John Cook and the Huskers secured the signings of two of the top prospects in the nation, libero Olivia Mauch (Bennington, Neb.) and outside hitter Skyler Pierce (Lenexa, Kan.).&nbsp;&nbsp;

Mauch, a 5-6 libero, was the starting libero for the U.S. Girls U19 Team that won gold at the FIVB U19 World Championships in Croatia in August. She had 13 digs in the championship match, a 3-2 comeback win over Turkey. Mauch averaged 7.1 digs per set and had 49 service aces in her senior season at Bennington this fall, leading the Badgers to the Class B state semifinals each of the past two years.&nbsp;

Pierce, a 6-2 outside hitter, also has major international experience with the U.S. National Team program, having competed at the FIVB U21 World Championships in August. Pierce starred at Olathe Northwest, where she averaged 4.6 kills per set with a .402 hitting percentage to go along with 230 digs, 67 aces and 43 blocks in her senior season in which the Ravens finished third at the Kansas 6A state tournament.&nbsp;

Huskers Sign Olivia Mauch and Skyler Pierce

The Nebraska swimming and diving team continues their home stretch with a dual against Iowa on Friday at 4 p.m. (CT) at the Devaney Natatorium.&nbsp;

The Huskers are coming off a big win over Kansas last Friday, where they captured wins in 12 of the 16 events. Sophomore Gena Jorgenson took home three individual titles for the Huskers in the 1000 freestyle (10:07.89), 500 freestyle (4:57.16) and 400 IM (4:27.40).

Emily Haimes added two individual titles and two relay titles for the Huskers. Haimes barely edged freshman Beatrix Tanko for the win in the 50 freestyle (23.97) and added a first-place finish in the 100 freestyle (51.76). The co-captain teamed up with Tanko, Lexi Kucera and Giulia Marchi for a win in the 400 freestyle relay and contributed to the second-place 200 medley relay (1:45.21) with Gabby Donahue, JoJo Randby and Kucera.

Senior Sarah Barton grabbed three top-three finishes against the Jayhawks, including a win in the 200 butterfly (2:03.67). Freshman Anastasia Tichy finished closely behind with a time of 2:04.05.

Maia Hall earned two first-place finishes in the 100 breaststroke and 200 breaststroke for the Huskers. The junior from Whitby, England, set season-bests in both events with times of 1:04.29 and 2:18.63.

Marchi took home her second victory of the season in the 200 freestyle and set a season-best time of 1:51.52. Anna Vlachou and Kucera claimed second and third, respectively. Marchi added a runner-up finish in the 100 freestyle (52.21).

With a Big Ten Freshman of the Week title under her belt, Tanko continued to shine for the Huskers. She captured a win in the 100 butterfly (55.87) and a second-place finish in the 50 freestyle (24.04). Tanko also contributed to two top-three relays.

Freshman Antonina Harned earned a first-place finish on the three-meter dive with a score of 331.50. Abby Baxter and Kelsey Clairmont claimed third and fourth, with scores of 315.23 and 309.23. On the one-meter dive, Baxter took second (285.53) and Clairmont placed third (284.03).

The Iowa Hawkeyes enter the meet with a 1-1 record. Freshman Olivia Swalley had a big meet for the Hawkeyes in their last outing against Vanderbilt. Swalley notched three wins and broke into the Iowa Top-Ten List in the 100 breaststroke (1:02.16) and 200 breaststroke (2:17.41). She was named the Big Ten Freshman of the Week after her impressive performance against the Commodores.&nbsp;

In the previous meeting between these two teams in Iowa City, Iowa (Oct. 21, 2022), the Huskers outlasted the Hawkeyes by a score of 175-123.

Huskers set for dual with Hawkeyes

The&nbsp;<a href="http://www.supernovas.com/" target="_blank">Omaha Supernovas,</a>&nbsp;Nebraska’s professional volleyball team in the newly-established&nbsp;<a href="http://www.provolleyball.com/" target="_blank">Professional Volleyball Federation</a>,&nbsp;has&nbsp;announced beloved former&nbsp;University of Nebraska&nbsp;Huskers&nbsp;Kenzie Maloney&nbsp;and&nbsp;Kenzie Knuckles, as well as former Creighton Bluejay&nbsp;Jaela Zimmerman&nbsp;will be joining the organization as “Supernovas&nbsp;Ambassadors” for the Fan Engagement Team.&nbsp;

“This is beyond exciting to have these amazing women who embody the word ‘Champions’ represent&nbsp;the next phase in the growth of the sport we all love. As Supernovas Ambassadors they will interact with the fans throughout our state and on match day,” said Supernovas&nbsp;President,&nbsp;Diane Mendenhall. “The&nbsp;relationship between a professional sports team and its fans is truly special, and having such highly recognizable former players&nbsp;whose love of the game is&nbsp;unprecedented and truly want&nbsp;to help us go beyond the boundaries of entertainment and&nbsp;foster a real sense of community. These former players&nbsp;are true standouts,&nbsp;and&nbsp;we can’t&nbsp;wait to see the level of enthusiasm&nbsp;and knowledge of the game&nbsp;they bring to the Supernovas fanbase.” &nbsp;

As Ambassadors, these highly decorated Huskers and Bluejay athletes will be active in the community&nbsp;while&nbsp;building&nbsp;positive connections and relationships with Supernova fans. They&nbsp;will be dedicated to making everyone, those new to the sport and seasoned&nbsp;volleyball enthusiasts, feel part of the team and&nbsp;this movement.&nbsp;

Meet the Supernovas Ambassadors:&nbsp;

Kenzie Maloney, a two-time National Champion and decorated former Husker, joined the Pro Volleyball Federation as a Player Relations Associate, earlier this year.&nbsp;Maloney will&nbsp;help lead the Supernovas&nbsp;Ambassadors&nbsp;as the Assistant Director for Fan Engagement. Maloney was an integral part of the Nebraska Volleyball&nbsp;team from 2015 to 2018, where she took part in four Final Fours, two conference championships, and two national championships. A libero, she was named to the AVCA All-America third team after her senior season in 2018.&nbsp;

Maloney added, “As a former volleyball athlete and University of Nebraska alum, I am truly thrilled to be part of the ongoing growth of this incredible sport in the volleyball pinnacle of the nation!”&nbsp;

Kenzie Knuckles&nbsp;was a libero&nbsp;and defensive specialist for the Nebraska Cornhuskers&nbsp;from 2019-2022. She was named to the All-Big Ten Freshman Team in 2019 and was part of the Tom Osborne Citizenship Team in 2021 and 2022. She finished her Husker career with 1,098 career digs, 232 assists, 90 service aces and 66 kills. After spending her first two seasons as a libero, Knuckles transitioned to defensive specialist where she thrived to help Nebraska finish as national runner-up during&nbsp;her junior season in 2021.&nbsp;

Knuckles shared, “I'm&nbsp;extremely proud and excited to be working with the Supernovas to promote professional volleyball within the states. Being able to help grow the sport I love, and the team representing&nbsp;Nebraska, is a true honor. As I am still rehabbing my knee, I’m&nbsp;hoping to be able to play volleyball again sometime soon. Thank you to the Supernovas for allowing me to stay in our special volleyball world and working with our world-class fans until I can return to the sport.”&nbsp;

Jaela Zimmerman&nbsp;was a standout outside hitter for the Creighton Bluejays. The Lincoln, Nebraska, native became the 15th&nbsp;player in Creighton history to reach 1,000 career kills. She was named to the preseason All-BIG EAST Team for three straight seasons. &nbsp;

Zimmerman&nbsp;shared, “Professional volleyball in the United States is finally here which allows the world’s most&nbsp;elite volleyball players to stay home and play in front of their fans. Although I am retired,&nbsp;I cannot wait to be a small part of history for the sport of volleyball and women in sports!”&nbsp;

The former Bluejay standout was a three-time All-BIG EAST honoree including a historic 2021 season where she was the only player in the conference to average more than 3.00 kills and 3.00 digs per set. &nbsp;

“Volleyball in the state of Nebraska just got better! Although I am unfortunately retired, there is no better way to stay in the volleyball world than by supporting these elite athletes,” Zimmerman added. “I am beyond excited to be a small part of this journey of bringing Professional Volleyball to the United States! Make sure to come see&nbsp;the Supernovas play to not only support them but support women in sports and professional volleyball!”&nbsp;

The Supernovas will begin competing in the Pro Volleyball Federations' inaugural season in January. Omaha will be home to history as the Supernovas will host the Atlanta Vibe for the league’s first-ever match on January 24 at 7 p.m. at the CHI Health Center. They&nbsp;will be dedicated to making everyone, those new to the sport and seasoned&nbsp;volleyball enthusiasts, feel part of the team and&nbsp;this movement.&nbsp;Meet the Supernovas Ambassadors:&nbsp;Kenzie Maloney, a two-time National Champion and decorated former Husker, joined the Pro Volleyball Federation as a Player Relations Associate, earlier this year.&nbsp;Maloney will&nbsp;help lead the Supernovas&nbsp;Ambassadors&nbsp;as the Assistant Director for Fan Engagement. Maloney was an integral part of the Nebraska Volleyball&nbsp;team from 2015 to 2018, where she took part in four Final Fours, two conference championships, and two national championships. A libero, she was named to the AVCA All-America third team after her senior season in 2018.&nbsp;Maloney added, “As a former volleyball athlete and University of Nebraska alum, I am truly thrilled to be part of the ongoing growth of this incredible sport in the volleyball pinnacle of the nation!”&nbsp;--&nbsp;Kenzie Knuckles&nbsp;was a libero&nbsp;and defensive specialist for the Nebraska Cornhuskers&nbsp;from 2019-2022. She was named to the All-Big Ten Freshman Team in 2019 and was part of the Tom Osborne Citizenship Team in 2021 and 2022. She finished her Husker career with 1,098 career digs, 232 assists, 90 service aces and 66 kills. After spending her first two seasons as a libero, Knuckles transitioned to defensive specialist where she thrived to help Nebraska finish as national runner-up during&nbsp;her junior season in 2021.&nbsp;Knuckles shared, “I'm&nbsp;extremely proud and excited to be working with the Supernovas to promote professional volleyball within the states. Being able to help grow the sport I love, and the team representing&nbsp;Nebraska, is a true honor. As I am still rehabbing my knee, I’m&nbsp;hoping to be able to play volleyball again sometime soon. Thank you to the Supernovas for allowing me to stay in our special volleyball world and working with our world-class fans until I can return to the sport.”&nbsp;--&nbsp;Jaela Zimmerman&nbsp;was a standout outside hitter for the Creighton Bluejays. The Lincoln, Nebraska, native became the 15th&nbsp;player in Creighton history to reach 1,000 career kills. She was named to the preseason All-BIG EAST Team for three straight seasons. &nbsp;Zimmerman&nbsp;shared, “Professional volleyball in the United States is finally here which allows the world’s most&nbsp;elite volleyball players to stay home and play in front of their fans. Although I am retired,&nbsp;I cannot wait to be a small part of history for the sport of volleyball and women in sports!”&nbsp;The former Bluejay standout was a three-time All-BIG EAST honoree including a historic 2021 season where she was the only player in the conference to average more than 3.00 kills and 3.00 digs per set. &nbsp;“Volleyball in the state of Nebraska just got better! Although I am unfortunately retired, there is no better way to stay in the volleyball world than by supporting these elite athletes,” Zimmerman added. “I am beyond excited to be a small part of this journey of bringing Professional Volleyball to the United States! Supernovas announce beloved Husker & Bluejay Volleyball stars as Team Ambassadors 

Head Coach Heather Brink announced the addition of three future Huskers to the women’s gymnastics program on Wednesday.&nbsp;

Reese Baker (Fairfield, Calif.), Lauren Hollifield (Dacula, Ga.) and Molly Peterson (Woodbury, Minn.) will join the roster for the 2024-25 season.

She is a three-time JO National Qualifier. In 2021, she placed ninth on vault and bars. In 2022, she earned a ninth-place finish on vault and seventh on all-around. In 2023, she was fourth on bars, ninth on beam and eighth in all-around. Peterson was a 2023 state beam champ and placed second on vault, first on bars and second in all-around at regionals. She earned an impressive score of 9.950 on bars in 2023 and was a 2022 Nastia Cup qualifier and floor state champion.&nbsp;The daughter of Kip and Heidi Peterson, Molly was born on Oct. 19, 2005. She has two older brothers, Cole and Aaron, and enjoys golfing and baking in her free time.Peterson on Nebraska: “I chose Nebraska because I felt at home when I walked on campus. I had the feeling of being so welcomed. The atmosphere on campus is what I was looking for and here at Nebraska I felt just that and more.”
