University of Nebraska Board of Regents

The University of Nebraska Board of Regents will meet on Friday, Oct. 4, 2024, at the University of Nebraska at Kearney. The meeting begins at 9 a.m. in Room 120 of the Regional Engagement Center, located just south of U.S. Highway 30 on the UNK campus.

The meeting is open to the public and will also be live-streamed at&nbsp;<a target="_blank" href="http://www.nebraska.edu/">www.nebraska.edu</a>.

The Board will consider allowing alcohol sales and consumption at all University of Nebraska athletic events. If approved, university leaders would be able to move forward with selling alcohol at athletic events once they have a plan in place to do so, without coming back to the Board for case-by-case approvals.

Contingent on Board approval next week, Husker Athletics intends to move forward with plans to offer alcohol at athletic events for the 2025-26 season, including football and volleyball games beginning next fall.

“The University of Nebraska has put a great deal of thought and care into how we approach alcohol at our athletic events. I’m very pleased that we have shown we can do this safely, responsibly and in a way that makes sense for our fans, our student-athletes and the institution as a whole,” said President Jeffrey P. Gold, M.D. “This is the next step as we consider how best to meet our fans’ expectations, carefully monitor safety and at the same time bring Nebraska in line with our peers in today’s changing college athletics landscape.”

Dr. Gold added that the university will use a portion of the revenues generated from alcohol sales to increase its investment in alcohol safety programs.

Athletic Director Troy Dannen said: “We are committed to providing a first-class game-day experience and amenities in all our athletic venues. Alcohol sales have been successfully and safely implemented at Pinnacle Bank Arena and Haymarket Park in recent years. Our success in those venues with alcohol sales, combined with our recent and planned infrastructure upgrades, has informed us we are prepared to provide the same opportunity at Memorial Stadium, the Bob Devaney Sports Center, and our other facilities, beginning with the 2025-26 athletic season.”

In 2022, the Board amended its policy regarding alcohol on university property to allow alcohol at designated athletic events, with the caveat that the administration would come back to the Board for approval for each individual event or venue.

Since that time, the Board has approved alcohol sales at Pinnacle Bank Arena for Husker men’s and women’s basketball, as well as Haymarket Park for Husker baseball and softball. In addition, regents approved alcohol sales at the 2022 Big Ten Wrestling Championships at Pinnacle Bank Arena, and at Volleyball Day in Memorial Stadium in 2023. No major alcohol-related incidents have occurred at any of these events. Alcohol has also long been sold safely at Maverick hockey games.

Nebraska is the only Big Ten institution that is not currently approved to sell alcohol at football games.

Other items for the Board’s consideration include:

·&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;Creation of a bachelor’s degree in applied leadership studies at the University of Nebraska at Omaha. (Addendum XI-A-3)

·&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;Allowing the president to finalize a contract to replace two grass practice fields for Husker Football located north of the Osborne Legacy Complex. The project will result in improved safety for student-athletes and overall maintenance of the practice fields. (Addendum XI-B-2)

·&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;A budget increase for the outdoor track replacement project at Husker Athletics which would allow for phase II of work to proceed. The second phase includes a press box, stadium seating, restrooms, concessions and IT infrastructure work. (Addendum XI-B-3)

Dr. Gold will also offer remarks, expanding on the opportunities he discussed when he was installed as NU’s ninth president earlier this month and updating the Board on current priorities.

Lincoln - Hamish Murray closed a strong tournament with a 72 to tie for seventh individually and lead the Nebraska men's golf team to a fifth-place finish at the Git-R-Done Invitational at Firethorn Golf Club on Tuesday.

Murray, a senior from Sydney, Australia, added his final-round 72 (+1) on Tuesday to rounds of 70 (-1) and 67 (-4) Monday to close with a 54-hole total of 209 (-4) on the par-71, 7,003-yard championship layout at Firethorn.

Fellow Husker Evan McDermott just missed a top-10 finish, tying for 11th with three solid rounds of his own, including a team-best 70 (-1) on Tuesday. The redshirt sophomore from Spring Lake, Mich., ended the tournament with a career-best 54-hole total of 211 (-2).

With Murray and McDermott leading the way, Nebraska produced its second straight top-five team finish to open the 2024-25 season. The Huskers closed their home tournament at 859 (+7) after a final-round 293 (+9). NU finished just one shot back of fourth-place Xavier (858) and two shots behind third-place Louisiana (857).

Sam Houston State fired its way to the team title with a three-round total of 830 (-22), led by individual champion Hugo Trommetter's 202 (-11).&nbsp;

South Alabama took runner-up honors at 838 (-14) behind the strong play of individual runner-up Filip Svendsen (204) and teammate Joshua Hill, who took third at 205.

In addition to the strong tournaments for Murray and McDermott, freshman Brodie Cunningham performed well in his collegiate debut, tying for 13th at 212 (-1) to lead Nebraska's "B" lineup of individuals. The youngster from Glasgow, Scotland capped his tournament with an even-par 71 Tuesday after rounds of 70 and 71 Monday.

Junior Quinn Yost produced Nebraska's No. 4 individual finish, taking 28th at 216 (+3), while graduate Reed Malleck and true freshman James Ackerman tied for 31st at 218 (+5). Ackerman and Yost both helped the Husker "B" lineup with rounds of 73 on Tuesday.

Nebraska will be back in action this weekend at the Badger Invitational. The Huskers open the three-day event on Sunday, Sept. 29 at 9 a.m. (CT). Live scoring will be available at Huskers.com from Scoreboard.clippd.com.

McCook, Neb. – North Platte Community College volleyball fell to rival McCook Community College in straight sets at the Peter and Dolores Graff Events Center on Tuesday night.

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. – After spearheading a defensive effort that kept one of Division II's top teams at bay, Chadron State junior defensive back Dax Yeradi was named the RMAC Defensive Player of the Week by the conference office. 

Yeradi, a junior from Wright, Wyoming, grabbed an interception and was the Eagles' joint-leading tackler during Saturday's 13-12 loss against No. 4 Colorado School of Mines, the two-time defending national runners-up who entered the contest averaging 36 points per game. 

Yeradi finished with a team-high six solo tackles among his seven tackles in the game. Midway through the second quarter, he grabbed his second interception in the season's first three games, forcing what was the Mines's first turnover of the 2024 season.

As an overall unit, the Chadron State defense held Colorado School of Mines to well under their season averages in rushing yards (97, entered averaging 205 per game) and passing yards (235, entered averaging 262 per game). 

The Eagles started off on fire, creating two sacks on the first series of the game and holding Mines to zero total yards of offense on eight plays in the first quarter. Chadron State also recovered a Mines fumble in the fourth quarter, helping CSC win the turnover battle 2-1. 

Through three weeks of the season, Chadron State's defense is allowing the fewest points per game (13.7) and second-fewest yards per game (264.7) in the RMAC. The Eagles have yet to allow more than 18 points in a game this season. 

On the year, Yeradi is tied for the team lead with 14 solo tackles and is fourth on the team with 15 overall tackles. He also has both of CSC's two interceptions so far in 2024.

The Eagles will play on the road for the first time this season on Saturday, visiting Colorado Mesa in Grand Junction. Kickoff is scheduled for 1 p.m.

Eagles' Yeradi named RMAC Defensive Player of the Week

Omaha Storm Chasers Welcome Diamond Baseball Holdings as New Owner

Lincoln&nbsp;- Hamish Murray fired a four-under-par 67 in the second round to finish the first 36 holes of the Git-R-Done Invitational at 137 (-5) to lead the Nebraska men's golf team at Firethorn Golf Club on Monday.

Murray, a senior from Sydney, Australia, closed the second round tied for third in the 65-player field, while the Huskers sat in third place among the 11 schools in the tournament. As a team, Nebraska ended the day at 566 (-2), including a season-best 280 (-4) in the second round.

Fellow Husker Evan McDermott matched Murray with a career-best-tying 67 (-4) of his own in the second round to enter Tuesday's final round in a tie for 12th at 140 (-2). The sophomore from Spring Lake, Mich., opened the day with a 73 (+2) on the 7,003-yard, par-71 layout at Firethorn. McDermott's second round featured seven birdies to overcome a bogey on No. 9 and a double-bogey on No. 16 as the only blemishes in his round.

While McDermott and Murray surged in the second round, Reed Malleck produced back-to-back even-par 71 (E), including a 33 (-2) on the back nine in the second round, to end his day in a tie for 16th (142).

Sophomore Rudy Sautron matched Malleck with an even-par 71 in the opening round, but settled for a 75 in the second round. He heads to the final round in a tie for 32nd at 146 (+4).

Junior Davis Johnson rounded out Nebraska's top lineup with a 76 (+5) to close his day in a tie for 48th at 150 (+8).

Overall, four Huskers finished the day among the top-20 golfers in the tournament, including Brodie Cunningham. The freshman from Glasgow, Scotland, performed well in his collegiate debut with a 141 (-1) through 36 holes that included a 70 (-1) in the opening round. Cunningham is tied for 12th to lead Nebraska's "B" lineup in the tournament. The Husker "B" team sits in sixth place at 574 (+6) after rounds of 288 and 286.&nbsp;

Quinn Yost, a junior from Farmington, N.M., sits in a tie for 22nd with a 36-hole total of 143 (+1), including an opening-round 69 (-2). Senior Grant Jabenis (Omaha, Neb.) freshman James Ackerman (Leawood, Kan.) also are hunting top-20 finishes after tying for 28th at 145 (+3) through two rounds.

Jackson Benge and Rhett Hughes rounded out the 11 Huskers in the field.

Sam Houston State took control of the team standings with a 272 (-12) in the second round to finish the day at 551 (-17). Bearkats Bret Gray and Hugo Trommetter enter the final round tied atop the individual leaderboard at 133 (-9), four shots ahead of Nebraska's Murray.

South Alabama sits 10 strokes behind Sam Houston State heading to the final round, as a trio of Jaguars - Filip Svendsen, Joshua Hill and Hugo Thyr - are among the top six in the tournament. Svenden is tied for fourth at 138 (-4), while Hill and Thyr are one shot back in a tie for sixth at 139 (-3).

Louisiana sits in fourth place as a team at 569 (+1) three shots behind the Huskers, behind the strong play of Eli Ortego, who is tied for fourth at 138 (-4).

Murray leads Huskers on first day at Firethorn

Las Vegas, NV - Former Tri-City Storm owner Kirk Brooks has passed away in a statement made by the Brook's family over the weekend. Brooks had been dealing with medical issues.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Brooks became the third owner of the Storm when he bought the team/arena in 2009 for $4.3 million from Joel Wiens. During his time as the owner, many players including current Seattle Kraken forward Jaden Schwartz went on to play at the collegiate and professional level. Tri-City would capture their first ever Clark Cup during the 2015-2016 season in front of a packed Viaero Center.&nbsp;

During his time as owner, the Storm made the playoffs six times and captured the 2018-2019 Anderson Cup which is awarded to the best team in the league during the regular season.&nbsp;

Brooks sold off the team/arena in 2019 to a new ownerships group from Chicago while remained involved with the team for the first few years of the transition. Brooks is a businessman from Las Vegas and was heavily involved with youth hockey in Vegas. Brooks owned the Las Vegas Ice Center where the Storm would hold their yearly camp.&nbsp;

The Tri-City Storm is a member of the United States Hockey League (USHL) which is the only tier 1 league in the United States. The USHL is an amateur league which allows players to move on to play NCAA hockey. This season marks the Storm 25th season in franchise history.&nbsp;

Football Coaches Poll 9.22.24

Ann Arbor, Mich.&nbsp;- Despite two finishes off corner kicks in the first half, the Nebraska soccer team was held scoreless in the second half and fell to Michigan 3-2 on Sunday afternoon.

With the win, Michigan claimed its first conference victory of the season, improving to 2-7-1 overall and 1-2-0 in conference play. The Huskers fell to 3-6-0 on the year and 0-3-0 in Big Ten competition.&nbsp;

NU was aggressive early to open the match earning a corner kick resulting in the first score for either team. In the seventh minute, Lauryn Anglim sent the corner into the top of the goalbox, which Abbey Schwarz met with a header sent into the back of the net. This finish marked Schwarz' first points of the season and her 11th career goal, and for Anglim, this is her 11th career match with at least one assist.&nbsp;

Michigan then got rolling, tallying two quick goals in both the eighth and ninth minutes, as Abby Zugay and Jenna Lang helped the Wolverines take the 2-1 lead. The advantage didn’t last long though, as Nebraska evened the score in the 17th minute off another corner kick from Anglim. The corner from the Nebraska native was bounced around in the box before Haley Peterson earned her first goal of the season as she slid the ball past the Michigan defense.&nbsp;

The score remained 2-2 for the rest of the first half, but NU held the advantage in shots (7-4) and shots on goal (5-4).&nbsp;

The Michigan defense played an impressive second half, holding Nebraska to just one shot on goal, and shutting out the Huskers. The Wolverines were able to find the back of the net however, as Taylor Brenna scored for their third finish of the game in the 63rd minute and went on to claim the 3-2 victory.&nbsp;

Sami Hauk earned her second start of the season, recording five saves and playing the complete game. Lauryn Anglim, Reese Borer, Jordan Zade and Sadie Waite joined her in playing the entire 90 minutes.&nbsp;

Huskers fall in second half 

LOUISVILLE, Ky. - The No. 5 Nebraska volleyball team earned its second win of the week against a top-five opponent with a 25-16, 25-17, 25-20 win over No. 4 Louisville in front of a crowd of 14,126 at the KFC Yum! Center on Sunday afternoon.&nbsp;

The Huskers improved to 10-1 on the season after picking up their first sweep against a top-five team on the road since Feb. 21, 2021 (Minnesota). Louisville fell to 8-2.

Nebraska dominated the serve game with seven aces to none for Louisville. The Huskers were also stout defensively, posting nine blocks and holding Louisville to .133 hitting.&nbsp;

On the attack, Nebraska hit .305. Harper Murray had 11 kills to lead the Big Red, while Merritt Beason had nine kills and hit .364 with four blocks. Andi Jackson added six kills on .545 hitting with four blocks, and Lindsay Krause added five kills.

Bergen Reilly finished with 25 assists, six digs, four kills and two blocks. Lexi Rodriguez had a team-high eight digs. Rebekah Allick led the team in blocks with five.&nbsp;

Anna DeBeer had 12 kills for Louisville. Charitie Luper and Sofia Maldonado Diaz each had eight.&nbsp;

Set 1: Louisville led 5-3 before a 4-0 run served by Murray that included kills by Murray and Krause. With NU ahead 9-8, Krause served a 7-0 run that made it 16-8. Allick had a solo block, Beason and Reilly had a block, Murray posted a kill, and Krause served an ace to force two Louisville timeouts during her service run. A kill by Jackson and ace by Beason increased NU's lead to 20-11, and Murray served an ace to make it 22-12. Louisville scored three in a row before Jackson terminated for a sideout, and Reilly dumped a kill for set point. Krause put the set away, 25-16, with a kill. NU outhit Louisville .320 to .105.&nbsp;

Set 2: Krause had a kill, and after a block by Allick and Beason, served three straight aces for a 5-2 Husker lead. After a Murray kill made it 7-3, Rodriguez took the service line and ripped off a 6-0 run for a 12-3 advantage. She served one ace, and Murray had a kill, while Beason and Jackson combined for a block. Nebraska led 17-7 when Louisville scored four points in a row to get within 17-11. Reilly dumped a kill for sideout, and Beason terminated back-to-back kills before Krause added another to restore a double-digit lead, 21-11. Beason tallied two more kills for set point, 24-15, and a Murray kill finished it off, 25-17.&nbsp;

Set 3: Louisville led 10-7 when kills by Beason and Murray cut the deficit to one. A kill by Beason and a block by Jackson and Reilly tied the score at 11-11. Louisville went back ahead 12-11, but Jackson had two kills and a solo block for a 15-12 Husker lead at the media timeout. The Cardinals answered with a 4-1 spurt to tie the score at 16-16, and the Huskers took a timeout. Louisville then committed three straight hitting errors, and Beason terminated for a 20-16 Husker advantage. Krause and Murray tacked on kills to take the lead to 23-19, and Jackson and Reilly stuffed an attack for match point. Murray finished the match, 25-20, with her 11th kill.&nbsp;

Story by NU Athletic CommunicationsLOUISVILLE, Ky. - The No. 5 Nebraska volleyball team earned its second win of the week against a top-five opponent with a 25-16, 25-17, 25-20 win over No. 4 Louisville in front of a crowd of 14,126 at the KFC Yum! Center on Sunday afternoon.&nbsp;The Huskers improved to 10-1 on the season after picking up their first sweep against a top-five team on the road since Feb. 21, 2021 (Minnesota). Louisville fell to 8-2.Nebraska dominated the serve game with seven aces to none for Louisville. The Huskers were also stout defensively, posting nine blocks and holding Louisville to .133 hitting.&nbsp;On the attack, Nebraska hit .305. Harper Murray had 11 kills to lead the Big Red, while Merritt Beason had nine kills and hit .364 with four blocks. Andi Jackson added six kills on .545 hitting with four blocks, and Lindsay Krause added five kills.Bergen Reilly finished with 25 assists, six digs, four kills and two blocks. Lexi Rodriguez had a team-high eight digs. Rebekah Allick led the team in blocks with five.&nbsp;Anna DeBeer had 12 kills for Louisville. Charitie Luper and Sofia Maldonado Diaz each had eight.&nbsp;Set 1: Louisville led 5-3 before a 4-0 run served by Murray that included kills by Murray and Krause. With NU ahead 9-8, Krause served a 7-0 run that made it 16-8. Allick had a solo block, Beason and Reilly had a block, Murray posted a kill, and Krause served an ace to force two Louisville timeouts during her service run. A kill by Jackson and ace by Beason increased NU's lead to 20-11, and Murray served an ace to make it 22-12. Louisville scored three in a row before Jackson terminated for a sideout, and Reilly dumped a kill for set point. Krause put the set away, 25-16, with a kill. NU outhit Louisville .320 to .105.&nbsp;Set 2: Krause had a kill, and after a block by Allick and Beason, served three straight aces for a 5-2 Husker lead. After a Murray kill made it 7-3, Rodriguez took the service line and ripped off a 6-0 run for a 12-3 advantage. She served one ace, and Murray had a kill, while Beason and Jackson combined for a block. Nebraska led 17-7 when Louisville scored four points in a row to get within 17-11. Reilly dumped a kill for sideout, and Beason terminated back-to-back kills before Krause added another to restore a double-digit lead, 21-11. Beason tallied two more kills for set point, 24-15, and a Murray kill finished it off, 25-17.&nbsp;Set 3: Louisville led 10-7 when kills by Beason and Murray cut the deficit to one. A kill by Beason and a block by Jackson and Reilly tied the score at 11-11. Louisville went back ahead 12-11, but Jackson had two kills and a solo block for a 15-12 Husker lead at the media timeout. The Cardinals answered with a 4-1 spurt to tie the score at 16-16, and the Huskers took a timeout. Louisville then committed three straight hitting errors, and Beason terminated for a 20-16 Husker advantage. Krause and Murray tacked on kills to take the lead to 23-19, and Jackson and Reilly stuffed an attack for match point. Lincoln - In a prime-time showdown between unbeaten top-25 teams, No. 24 Illinois made plays on both sides of the ball in overtime to hand No. 22 Nebraska its first loss of the season on Friday night.

Playing in front of the 400th consecutive sellout at Memorial Stadium with 86,936 fans on hand and a FOX national TV audience, the Huskers suffered a 31-24 loss after taking a 24-17 lead on the opening play of the fourth quarter. Nebraska slipped to 3-1 overall and 0-1 in the Big Ten, while Illinois improved to 4-0 and 1-0 in the conference.

Dylan Raiola's one-yard touchdown pass to Janiran Bonner was Raiola's third scoring strike of the night, as the freshman completed 24-of-35 passes for 297 yards, including a pair of touchdowns to Isaiah Neyor. The transfer wide receiver finished with four catches for 90 yards in the game, including a 44-yard catch on NU's final scoring drive. 

Fellow transfer Jahmal Banks led the Big Red with eight catches for 94 yards, while tight end Thomas Fidone II added two catches for a career-high 46 yards, including a career-long 29-yard catch on NU's go-ahead drive to open the final period.

Following Nebraska's go-ahead score, the Illini answered with a nine-play, 75-yard drive that was capped by a six-yard pass from Luke Altmyer to Brandon Harrison with 10:36 left. 

Nebraska's ensuing drive was filled with mistakes, but the Blackshirts stepped up as Ceyair Wright forced a fumble by Altmyer that was recovered by Mikai Gbayor on the Illini's next drive. 

Raiola and the offense moved the ball 41 yards to the Illinois 21, thanks in part to 18 yards on four carries from Dante Dowdell early in the drive. Dowdell led all rushers in the game with 72 yards on 20 totes.

The Huskers faced a 3rd-and-3 at the Illinois 21, when Raiola saw Luke Lindenmeyer come free behind the Illini defense in the end zone, but Raiola's pass was too long for Lindenmeyer to reach. The Huskers attempted a 39-yard field goal, but John Hohl missed the kick wide left to leave the game tied at 24 with just under three minutes remaining.

The Illini took over and picked up two quick first downs on the ground, before the Blackshirts stiffened to force a punt on 4th-and-9 from the NU 48. Nebraska started deep inside its own 10-yard line with 26 seconds left and chose to run out the clock and head to overtime.

Nebraska won the toss and chose to defend, but the Blackshirts surrendered a 21-yard run by Kaden Feagin on the first play of overtime. The next play resulted in Altmyer's fourth touchdown pass of the game with a four-yard connection to Pat Bryant. For Bryant, who led Illinois with five receptions for 74 yards, it was his second touchdown catch of the game. 

Altmyer finished the game with 215 yards on 21-of-27 passing, while adding 10 carries for 21 yards, despite a pair of Husker sacks. Feagin led the Illinois rushing attack with 69 yards on 12 carries, while Josh McCray contributed 38 yards on nine carries.

Nebraska's attempt to answer in overtime was unsuccessful, including a false start and three sacks of Raiola, as the Huskers lost their eighth consecutive overtime game dating back to 2014. Raiola had only been sacked twice in regulation, matching the two sacks suffered by Altmyer and the Illini.

After an entertaining first half, Nebraska took a 17-10 lead to the locker room following Raiola's 11-yard touchdown pass to Neyor with 16 seconds left. It was the second touchdown grab of the half by Neyor, who also scored NU's first touchdown in the middle of the end zone to put the Big Red up 10-7 at the end of the first quarter.

Neyor's highlight reel catch on the Husker sideline in the end zone capped a nine-play, 70-yard drive that consumed 3:06 and also featured a 27-yard pass from Raiola to Banks to convert a crucial 3rd-and-6 from the Illinois 38. 

It was the fifth catch of the half by Banks, who finished with 61 receiving yards in the opening 30 minutes. 

Raiola finished the half with 156 yards while completing 16-of-23 with two touchdowns. He and Neyor both had a third touchdown wiped off the books midway through the second quarter. Raiola hooked up with Neyor on a 36-yard strike that was ruled a touchdown initially on the field after Neyor was in possession of both the ball across the goal line and his foot down in the end zone as he was falling to the turf. However, the Illini's Torrie Cox Jr. continued to fight for the ball as Neyor went to the ground in the middle of the end zone near the Husker sideline. Cox took the ball from Neyor and replay overturned the touchdown, keeping the game tied at 10 until Raiola and Neyor's final connection of the half. 

Dowdell also had a strong first half, carrying 13 times for 54 yards to power a Nebraska running game that put up 79 yards on the ground, including 13 from Neyor to set up his first touchdown catch. Rahmir Johnson added three carries for 13 yards in the opening half.

Illinois looked sharp to open the game, stopping Nebraska's opening drive after allowing one first down, before marching 78 yards in just eight plays capped by Altmyer's 27-yard touchdown pass to Bryant. The scoring strike gave the Fighting Illini a 7-0 lead just over three minutes into the game.

Raiola and the Huskers answered with an 18-play, 72-yard drive that chewed up 8:39 on the clock, but Nebraska settled for a 21-yard field goal by Hohl to cut the Illinois lead to 7-3 with 3:15 left in the first period.

The Blackshirst then came up with a big play, as John Bullock forced a fumble after Altmyer's 14-yard completion to Hank Beatty. DeShon Singleton recovered the fumble to set Raiola and the offense up at the Illinois 37. Bullock led the Blackshirts with nine tackles, while Singleton, Wright, Gbayor and MJ Sherman all added six stops.

Dowdell quickly chewed up 18 yards on two carries, before Neyor's 13-yard run to set up Raiola's six-yard scoring strike to him to give NU a 10-7 lead. Illinois answered with a 26-yard field goal after an eight-play, 62-yard drive to tie the game at 10.

For the game, Nebraska finished with 345 total yards, but was set back 25 yards in overtime after closing regulation with 370 yards. The Huskers finished regulation with 86 yards, but the three sacks of Raiola went for minus-38 rushing yards. The Huskers were also flagged nine times for 89 yards in the game, compared to just three penalties for 20 yards by Illinois.

Illinois finished with 381 total yards after producing 356 in regulation. The Illini produced 166 rushing yards.

Nebraska makes its first road trip of the season next Saturday, when the Huskers travel to West Lafayette, Ind., to face Purdue. Kick-off against the Boilermakers is set for 11 a.m. (CT).

Huskers fall in Overtime to Illinois

Nebraska head coach&nbsp;<a href="https://huskers.com/staff/matt-rhule">Matt Rhule</a>&nbsp;met with members of the media following Wednesday’s practice. He spoke on adjusting to gametime decisions and maintaining energy going into Friday night’s game.&nbsp;

“One thing we try to teach the players is that you prepare through the event,” he said. “It’s an old Al Golden saying when I used to work for him; the hay is in the barn. We don’t believe that. As you get in the game, you see how they’re playing and you try to adjust. We have a lot of work to do, but so far the guys have worked hard. We’ll keep trying to pick up steam heading into the game on Friday night.”&nbsp;

Rhule talked about being able to get many players involved on offense.

“We’ve thrown a lot of drop-back,” he said. “So when you throw drop-back, it’s progression one, two, three. You can get touches to guys by calling screens and things, which we do some of that. Let’s get the ball to this guy, get the ball to that guy. Last game we came out, we had a lot of tempo drop-back. Dylan’s pretty good at that. When you go to drop-back passes, the ball finds the open receiver. They pressured us and he threw the hot swing route. They blitzed us, he threw the glance to Isaiah (Neyor). It’s a good challenge to have, there’s only one ball. It’s hard to get everyone involved, I’m sure a ton of guys want to touch the ball more. I thought the wideouts played really well last week. They got open, the ball came to them. Dylan’s not afraid to work his way through all the progressions. He’s hit the fifth progression a couple times which is great to see.”&nbsp;

He also discussed the number of carries he’d like each running back to have.

“Every game is different,” he said. “Last game, I didn’t see the need to put a ton of carries on Dante (Dowdell) with a short week coming up, or our staff didn’t, and that’s pretty high level thinking by those guys. This game is different. As I’ve said, I’d like to have one guy in the low twenties, one guy around 15. We’re not running the quarterback, so you’re running some other guys, and obviously, you have to incorporate the receivers a little bit into the run game. As the game plays, we’re facing a team that has an elite run defense. They’re also an elite pass defense. They’re just an elite defense. Each game is a little different, we’ll see what we need to do in each game to win.”

NU will face off against the Illinois Fighting Illini on Friday, Sept. 20 at 7 p.m. (CT) at Memorial Stadium. The game will be broadcast on FOX, with radio coverage by the Huskers Radio Network.
