SUTHERLAND, Neb. — Nebraska musician Rascal Martinez is bringing his music career full circle, releasing a new single and music video while building a creative home base in his hometown.

In an interview with Z 93.5 Country’s Derek Beck, Martinez said his new song “Don’t Even Know You” will be released Nov. 21 on all streaming platforms. The track, written nearly a year ago, tells the story of a close friend coping with betrayal, addiction, and emotional abuse.

“It’s a song a lot of people can relate to,” Martinez said. “Hopefully, they can get something positive out of it.”

The accompanying music video, shot entirely in Sutherland and produced by a Nebraska-based team, features actress Katie Bodenhamer, Hershey who has had appearances as an actress in The Office, played Lacey in Desperation Road among other portrayals on-screen. The video also features North Platte local actor Landon Swedberg, who stepped in at the last minute as the male lead.

“We filmed it over three days and used all Nebraska people — Nebraska crew, Nebraska actors,” Martinez said. “It turned out just the way I hoped: heavy, emotional, and real.”

The project marks another milestone for Martinez, who in 2024 opened his own recording space, Stolen Vault Records, inside a renovated former bank building in downtown Sutherland.

“I bought it thinking it’d be an office, but then I turned the upstairs into a full recording studio,” he said. “We do rehearsals, record albums, and host intimate live shows for about 30 people. It’s kind of got that Bluebird Café vibe.”

Martinez said he’s been producing his own material and recording other artists while keeping his Nebraska roots at the center of his music.

“I’ve played all over the country, but I wanted something here that feels local — something where artists can tell their stories,” he said.

Sutherland Musician Rascal Martinez Debuts New Song, Builds Music Hub in Hometown (podcast)

(NORTH PLATTE, NEB.)&nbsp;&nbsp; —&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;Troopers with the Nebraska State Patrol (NSP) locates methamphetamine and cocaine during a traffic stop in western Nebraska.

At approximately 7:45 a.m. this morning, a trooper observed a red Chevrolet Trailblazer traveling eastbound on Interstate 80 fail to maintain its lane near mile marker 134. During the stop, the trooper observed a THC vape pen in plain view.

Troopers searched the vehicle and located a vacuum sealed bag containing 1 pound of suspected methamphetamine wrapped in cellophane. Troopers also located a small amount of suspected cocaine, drug paraphernalia, and a TCH pen.

The driver, Eric Anderson, 43, of Arvada, Colorado, was arrested for possession of cocaine, possession of controlled substance with intent to deliver, no drug tax stamp, possession of marijuana less than one ounce, and possession of drug paraphernalia. He was lodged in Keith County Jail.

During the public forum, representatives from PeopleService Inc. and the YMCA will provide updates on ongoing projects and activities, including the third quarter 2025 report from the YMCA.

Council members will review several departmental and committee recommendations, including:

Homeland Security officials will visit repurposed McCook Work Ethic Camp this week, first detainees could be sent soon

LINCOLN —&nbsp;The Nebraska Governor’s Office said a 17-day delay in publicizing a state-federal contract to convert a Nebraska prison into an immigration detention center was needed to conduct a legal review first of what information, if any, should be withheld.

Rob Jeffreys, director of the Nebraska Department of Correctional Services, signed the&nbsp;<a href="https://corrections.nebraska.gov/sites/default/files/Contract-NDCS-Department-of-Homeland-Security-ICE.pdf" target="_blank">183-page contract with attachments</a>&nbsp;with an unnamed official in U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement regarding use of the Work Ethic Camp in McCook on Sept. 30. However, the contract was not made&nbsp;<a href="https://nebraskaexaminer.com/2025/10/17/nebraska-signed-contract-with-ice-on-sept-30-to-turn-state-prison-into-migrant-detention-center/">publicly available</a>&nbsp;until Oct. 17, when Gov. Jim Pillen’s office publicized the partnership.

In a Wednesday email responding to questions from Oct. 17, Pillen spokesperson Laura Strimple detailed the reasons for the legal review: What contract portions should legally be redacted under state and federal public information laws, “including laws protecting the integrity of the negotiation process and ensuring operational safety.”

Asked if the state had any other similar contracts with the federal government that have not yet been released, Strimple said, “There are no other related records which remain under legal review.”

Under the initial two-year contract, ICE plans to pay Nebraska at least $2.5 million each month to house federal detainees, adult men and women, at the repurposed Work Ethic Camp. The monthly reimbursement rate would increase by 3% in the second year.

Pillen’s office has said the contract would annually net Nebraska about $14.25 million. ICE will also pay Nebraska a one-time lump sum of $5.9 million for “facility renovations.”

All inmates previously housed at the Work Ethic Camp were moved to other Corrections facilities by&nbsp;<a href="https://nebraskaexaminer.com/2025/10/16/ags-office-all-inmates-moved-from-nebraskas-mccook-prison-planned-ice-detention-center/">early this month</a>. The state has not yet answered where they were moved or whether some were paroled or finished sentences.

Strimple said among&nbsp;<a href="https://nebraskalegislature.gov/laws/statutes.php?statute=84-712.05" target="_blank">state exemptions</a>&nbsp;used to withhold records were ones shielding information about the protection of public property security and persons on or within such property and personal information of personnel. Also used was a state exemption to shield certain information if its release could&nbsp;<a href="https://nebraskalegislature.gov/laws/statutes.php?statute=84-712.05" target="_blank">jeopardize promised federal funds</a>, services or other “essential information.”

Exemptions under the federal&nbsp;<a href="https://www.foia.gov/" target="_blank">Freedom of Information Act</a>&nbsp;were also used, though Strimple did not specify which. Nine congressional exemptions shield information that could be “harmful to a governmental or private interest.”

“The Office of the Governor has released all public information while also considering well-established exceptions,” Strimple said.

Under state law, public records exemptions allow —&nbsp;but do not require — certain information to be withheld.

Among the information redacted in the released contract:

The governor&nbsp;<a href="https://nebraskaexaminer.com/2025/08/19/is-next-alligator-alcatraz-immigration-detention-center-headed-to-sw-nebraska/">first announced</a>&nbsp;that Nebraska would work with ICE to house federal migrant detainees on Aug. 19.

Jennifer Houlden, acting legal director for ACLU Nebraska, said last week that Pillen’s contract negotiations put Nebraska in “uncharted territory” in converting a state prison “into an arm of a massive detention and deportation campaign.”

“It speaks volumes that Nebraskans are only just now getting hard facts about this agreement, weeks after it has been signed,” Houlden said in a statement. “It is troubling that what we have now seen raises new questions and concerns about oversight, liability and the state’s authority to even open this facility.”&nbsp;

The Governor’s Office had&nbsp;<a href="https://nebraskaexaminer.com/2025/10/14/requests-denied-nebraska-turns-down-records-requests-on-mccook-ice-jail/">denied at least nine records requests</a>, including from the Nebraska Examiner, seeking more information on the Nebraska-ICE partnership by late September. Talks between Nebraska and federal officials had been happening since at least March, according to records separately obtained by Common Cause Nebraska, a government watchdog group.

The Examiner’s request included a standing request for the contract once it was signed and also sought information on communications between Pillen, his staff and Homeland Security officials about Nebraska housing federal immigration detainees. On the communications t the Governor’s Office said records exist but denied records on the grounds that such records were:

It argues the joint effort and contract violates&nbsp;<a href="https://nebraskalegislature.gov/laws/statutes.php?statute=72-801" target="_blank">state laws</a>&nbsp;and separation of powers in the&nbsp;<a href="https://nebraskalegislature.gov/laws/articles.php?article=IV-19" target="_blank">Nebraska Constitution</a>&nbsp;without legislative approval.

In a court filing this week seeking to dismiss the case, the Nebraska Attorney General’s Office, on behalf of Pillen and Jeffreys, defended the contract, writing: “Nebraska statutes do not hamstring the department from adapting its facilities to address ever-changing circumstances.”

Red Willow County District Judge Patrick Heng rejected a temporary restraining order to pause state-federal action Oct. 16, before it was clear a contract with ICE had been signed. Heng will consider a temporary injunction at a hearing this Friday. It would allow the lawsuit to continue and block Nebraska from accepting detainees.

“Homeland Security is doing walk-throughs this week,” Pillen said Monday on his monthly radio call-in show. “We would expect … folks would begin being incarcerated there in the next week.”

However, the contract was not made&nbsp;<a href="https://nebraskaexaminer.com/2025/10/17/nebraska-signed-contract-with-ice-on-sept-30-to-turn-state-prison-into-migrant-detention-center/">publicly available</a>&nbsp;until Oct. 17, when Gov. Pillen’s office defends 17-day delay in releasing Nebraska-ICE detention contract

A Mid-Plains Community College graduate has earned national recognition after taking first place in the apprentice division of the 2025 ServiceTitan HVAC National Championship.

Braden Reeser, a 2023 graduate of the MPCC HVAC program and native of Ogallala, Nebraska, clinched the national title earlier this month in West Palm Beach, Florida, after earning a spot in the apprentice division of the competition.

The event brought together the country’s most promising HVAC technicians and professionals to test their skills in real-world diagnostic and repair challenges.

“I started the process just for fun,” Reeser said. “A coworker told me about it, so I took a few online tests while traveling for work. I kind of forgot about it—until I got a call a few months later saying I made it to the finals.”

The finals consisted of two rounds. The first round featured 10 national finalists selected from hundreds of online applicants.&nbsp; While the first round was tough, Reeser said he relied on daily experience and strong fundamentals learned at MPCC to succeed.

“Getting to the second round, it was, now there's money on the line. Now I have got to win it,” he joked. “Even if I hadn’t won, the experience alone—meeting new people and seeing Florida for the first time—was worth it.”

The competition awarded $100,000 total prize pool, which was shared between the top-performing professionals and apprentices.

Reeser attributes his success to the strong technical foundation he received at MPCC, as well as his professional experience with Springer’s Appliance in Ogallala and Knobel Refrigeration in North Platte, both of which supported him during his time as a student and early in his career.

Now with nearly five years of expertise in the field, Reeser says the best part of working in HVAC is twofold: every day is different—and the paycheck is good.

“I would encourage anyone unsure about their future to consider community college,” he added. “It’s affordable, efficient and gives you a head start in the workforce.”

Looking ahead, the newly crowned champion is considering a future in industrial HVAC or even a shift into law enforcement. But no matter the path, he says his time at MPCC gave him the tools to succeed.

“This program teaches you the basics that you’ll use every day,” he said. “From HVAC and plumbing to light welding and carpentry—it’s a jack-of-all-trades field. And Mid-Plains got me started.”

OGALLALA, NEB - Nebraska hunters are gearing up for the start of pheasant and quail season this weekend, and experts say bird numbers across southwest Nebraska are showing strong signs of recovery after recent drought years.

Pheasants Forever Coordinating Wildlife Biologist Addie Piernicky said during a recent interview that the season officially opens for adults on Saturday, Oct. 25, following a successful youth weekend last week.

“We are still somewhat recovering from our drought two years ago,” Piernicky said. “But our numbers — it’s amazing how well they have come back.”

According to Piernicky, recent crow count and rural mail carrier surveys show bird numbers are up significantly across southwest Nebraska, including in the McCook area and parts of Perkins and Keith Counties.

“We’re seeing about a 150% increase in our crow count surveys,” she said. “We’re still down from a few years ago when we had really, really good numbers, but they’re getting close.”

Hunters heading out this weekend are reminded to follow safety and access rules. Piernicky said firearms must be unloaded in vehicles, and hunters need permission—either written or verbal—from landowners before entering private property. Public access areas enrolled in the Open Fields and Waters program are clearly marked, and maps can be found in printed atlases available at gas stations, Walmarts, and online through the Nebraska Game and Parks Commission.

For those targeting pheasants, the daily bag limit is three roosters, with a possession limit of 12. The quail limit is six per day, with a possession limit of 24.

Piernicky also reminded hunters pursuing waterfowl to carry a valid HIP number, along with state and federal duck stamps.

As excitement builds for opening weekend, Piernicky encouraged hunters to show respect for one another in the field.

“Have common courtesy,” she said. “We might all have the same public access area in mind. If someone’s already there, maybe try another spot — or make some new friends.”

The funds support Nebraska undergraduate students demonstrating financial need, with each college selecting scholarship recipients based on a variety of criteria. Among the institutions benefiting from this support are Mid Plains Community College and Nebraska College of Technical Agriculture, along with 28 other schools statewide.

Ogallala teen Addison L. Malone was sentenced Monday to serve two to five years in the Nebraska Department of Corrections for a 2024 vehicular manslaughter case that took the life of her passenger and friend, Nathan Sandoval. The sentence was handed down by Lincoln County District Court Judge Cindy R. Volkmer.

According to investigators, the fatal crash occurred on July 18, 2024, west of North Platte on a dead-end stretch of West A Street. Authorities say Malone was driving at a high rate of speed when she lost control and struck a large tree. The crash reportedly happened several hours before it was discovered, and evidence indicated alcohol was a factor. Investigators also believe Malone may not have realized she was approaching a dead end before the impact.

Malone was initially charged with multiple offenses, including second-degree murder, motor vehicle homicide, manslaughter, and minor in possession of alcohol. She later entered a no contest plea to a single count of manslaughter on August 11, 2025, as part of a plea agreement with prosecutors. In exchange, the remaining charges were dismissed, and both sides agreed to recommend a sentence of two to five years in prison. Following the plea, Judge Volkmer ordered a presentence investigation before formally issuing the sentence this week.

At Monday’s hearing, Malone received the recommended sentence, which will be served in the Nebraska Department of Corrections. Under state law, the charge is classified as a Class 2A felony, carrying a potential maximum sentence of 20 years.&nbsp;

The crash and subsequent sentencing serve as a reminder of the consequences of impaired and reckless driving. Law enforcement officials have reiterated the importance of safe and sober driving, particularly among young drivers. Nebraska claims Colorado is restricting water flow and obstructing the construction of the Perkins County Canal, a $500 million project Nebraska says is necessary to secure more water for its use.

In response, Colorado officials argue that the lawsuit is premature and lacks merit. Governor Jared Polis and Attorney General Phil Weiser have called Nebraska’s case a “meritless escalation,” saying Colorado is fully complying with the compact and that the canal is unnecessary. They assert that the lawsuit is an attempt to renegotiate a century-old agreement.

The South Platte River Compact, signed in 1923 and ratified by Congress in 1926, allocates water rights between Colorado and Nebraska. Under the compact, Nebraska is entitled to 120 cubic feet per second (cfs) of water during the irrigation season (April 1 to October 15). Additionally, Nebraska can divert up to 500 cfs during the non-irrigation season, provided it constructs a canal to transport the water. Colorado Governor Jared Polis and Attorney General Phil Weiser have characterized Nebraska's lawsuit as a "meritless escalation" and urged the Supreme Court to reject it. Colorado Pushes Back Against Nebraska Water Lawsuit

Southwest Nebraska Public Health Department (SWNPHD) is joining partners across the country to recognize National Lead Poisoning Prevention Week, October 19th to 25th, by raising awareness about the dangers of lead exposure and how families can take simple steps to keep children safe.

Lead poisoning is completely preventable, yet it remains a concern for families throughout Nebraska. Even small amounts of lead can cause serious health problems, especially for children under the age of six. Lead exposure can affect brain development, lower IQ, and cause attention and behavior problems that can last a lifetime.

“There’s no safe level of lead in a child’s body,” said Diana Garcia, Program Manager at SWNPHD. “The best way to prevent harm is through awareness, regular cleaning practices, and routine blood lead screening.”

In southwest Nebraska, one of the greatest risks for lead exposure comes from the area’s older housing. Many homes built before 1978 may still contain lead-based paint, which was commonly used at the time. As this paint deteriorates, it can create lead dust that settles on floors, windowsills, toys, and in the soil—areas where children are most likely to come into contact. The high number of older houses in the region increases this risk. For example, in Frontier County, 59% (almost 2 out of 3) of houses were built before 1959, according to the county’s Comprehensive Plan.

These factors highlight why lead exposure is especially relevant in older homes, but risks can also come from other sources such as plumbing that has lead pipes or lead solder, contaminated soil, imported pottery or toys, or “take-home” exposures from certain workplaces like construction, auto repair, or battery recycling, where lead particles from the worksite stick to boots or clothing.

In Nebraska, from fall 2023 through fall 2024, 36,725 children aged 1 to 5 were tested for elevated lead levels, representing about 20% of that age group. This statewide rate marks a modest increase from previous years, with public health efforts focusing specifically on children living in high-risk zip codes and those covered by Medicaid, which requires providers to do blood lead tests at 12 months and 24 months of age. Results data showed that 723 of those children (about 2%) had elevated blood lead levels.

In southwest Nebraska, blood lead testing coverage remains a critical local priority. As of 2023-2024, out of approximately 2,485 children aged 6 and under in the SWNPHD coverage area, just 134 were screened for elevated blood lead, which equates to about 5% of eligible children. This is substantially below the statewide average of 20% but does reflect an increase in testing due to community awareness, targeted outreach, and education campaigns.

This year SWNPHD launched a new lead screening service to improve access and convenience for families, increase the number of children screened locally, and address the risks associated with aging housing, lead plumbing, and take-home exposures in southwest Nebraska.

Parents and caregivers can take simple steps to protect children from lead exposure:

• Keep clean: Wash children’s hands and toys often.  </figure>Southwest Nebraska Public Health Department (SWNPHD) is joining partners across the country to recognize National Lead Poisoning Prevention Week, October 19th to 25th, by raising awareness about the dangers of lead exposure and how families can take simple steps to keep children safe.Lead poisoning is completely preventable, yet it remains a concern for families throughout Nebraska. Even small amounts of lead can cause serious health problems, especially for children under the age of six. Lead exposure can affect brain development, lower IQ, and cause attention and behavior problems that can last a lifetime.“There’s no safe level of lead in a child’s body,” said Diana Garcia, Program Manager at SWNPHD. “The best way to prevent harm is through awareness, regular cleaning practices, and routine blood lead screening.”In southwest Nebraska, one of the greatest risks for lead exposure comes from the area’s older housing. Many homes built before 1978 may still contain lead-based paint, which was commonly used at the time. As this paint deteriorates, it can create lead dust that settles on floors, windowsills, toys, and in the soil—areas where children are most likely to come into contact. The high number of older houses in the region increases this risk. For example, in Frontier County, 59% (almost 2 out of 3) of houses were built before 1959, according to the county’s Comprehensive Plan.These factors highlight why lead exposure is especially relevant in older homes, but risks can also come from other sources such as plumbing that has lead pipes or lead solder, contaminated soil, imported pottery or toys, or “take-home” exposures from certain workplaces like construction, auto repair, or battery recycling, where lead particles from the worksite stick to boots or clothing.In Nebraska, from fall 2023 through fall 2024, 36,725 children aged 1 to 5 were tested for elevated lead levels, representing about 20% of that age group. This statewide rate marks a modest increase from previous years, with public health efforts focusing specifically on children living in high-risk zip codes and those covered by Medicaid, which requires providers to do blood lead tests at 12 months and 24 months of age. Results data showed that 723 of those children (about 2%) had elevated blood lead levels.In southwest Nebraska, blood lead testing coverage remains a critical local priority. As of 2023-2024, out of approximately 2,485 children aged 6 and under in the SWNPHD coverage area, just 134 were screened for elevated blood lead, which equates to about 5% of eligible children. This is substantially below the statewide average of 20% but does reflect an increase in testing due to community awareness, targeted outreach, and education campaigns.This year SWNPHD launched a new lead screening service to improve access and convenience for families, increase the number of children screened locally, and address the risks associated with aging housing, lead plumbing, and take-home exposures in southwest Nebraska.Parents and caregivers can take simple steps to protect children from lead exposure:• Keep clean: Wash children’s hands and toys often. North Platte, Neb. -&nbsp; Carla Warren has spent decades quietly becoming part of the family for countless North Platte children — a steady presence who shows up, celebrates small victories, and greets each morning with a smile. This month, she was named the Community Hero for Kids by The Post and Prairie Friends &amp; Flowers, an honor she met with genuine surprise and humility.

Her path into childcare wasn’t sudden. “Oh geez, that was a long time ago,” she laughs when asked how she first started working with kids. She began at North Platte Community Daycare in the infant room, later spent ten years with Head Start, and about fifteen years ago she started working for the school system. What began as a lunchroom para eventually became a role she knew was meant for her when coworkers encouraged her to apply for a special-needs para position. “That’s kind of where my heart is,” she says.

Carla points to family as one root of that calling. Growing up, she had a cousin with cerebral palsy who “was just always special to me,” and her parents influenced her outlook as well — they were foster parents to many children. Those early experiences, combined with a faith community she credits, helped shape a mindset that’s equal parts practical and deeply affectionate.

She speaks about the kids she works with with a soft, clear affection. “They teach me just as much as I teach them,” she says. “They’re open and loving and caring — especially the ones I work with at Adams. I’ve worked with kids I first met in Head Start who just graduated last year. That’s crazy.” Watching that arc — from preschool to graduation — is what Carla calls the most amazing part of the job.

There are difficult moments, of course, and she’s honest about that. Some days come with challenges, but those are quickly overshadowed by the small, human moments her work creates. 

“Then you go to the grocery store and from clear across the store you hear, ‘Miss Carla,’ and a kid comes running and gives you a hug,” she said with a smile. “That’s what it’s all about.”

Carla admires the courage of the children she supports. 

“They have so many struggles, but yet unconditional love,” she says. “They’re so strong — they’re not afraid of anything. They just try things — that’s awesome.” 

Her respect for their capability is direct and warm: “They can do anything that we can do.”

Some stories from her years stand out as reminders that her job stretches far beyond the classroom. Once, a single mother invited Carla to help on a family trip to Puerto Rico so the mom could relax and enjoy a vacation. 

“At first it was all a joke — the little girl came to school and said, ‘You can come in my suitcase,’” Carla remembers. When the mom really did call and ask her to come, the trip turned into an unforgettable experience and an example of how deep the bonds she builds with families can run.

When asked what it felt like to be nominated, Carla called the recognition “humbling” and a little surprising. “I’m just out there doing my job,” she said. The nomination came from a family she has known since preschool — a fact that makes the award as much about shared history as it is about her work.

Carla’s support system at home is part of what keeps her giving so much to others. 

“My husband, of course. He’s always my biggest fan,” she says, noting he’s the one who encourages her to slow down when she needs it. Faith and the church community are also central pillars in the way she approaches life and work.

Practical advice is never far from Carla’s lips. For anyone thinking about working in childcare or special education, she recommends trying it out first. “Shadow a day in the special needs room and see if it’s a fit,” she suggests, echoing the advice she received early in her career. “It’s not for everybody.”

Her gratitude extends to the families who have trusted her with their children, the co-workers who encouraged her, and the community that has embraced her over the years. “Once they’re part of my circle, they’re always part of my circle,” she says.

Quiet, steady, and full of heart, Carla Warren isn’t looking for praise. The Post & Prairie Friends & Flowers Present: This Month's Community Hero For Kids - Carla Warren

McCOOK, Neb. — A beloved McCook landmark known for its warm breads, pastries, and deep local roots has officially closed its doors. Embers Bakery &amp; Café announced Sunday that Saturday marked its final day of business, ending nearly seven decades of bakery tradition in the city’s downtown.

“With deep sadness, we’re here to share that Saturday was Embers Bakery’s final day,” owners Andrew and Alix Ambriz wrote in a Facebook post. “We are deeply grateful for everyone who supported us and especially thankful for our team… We will always cherish the memories we’ve made with all of you.”

The announcement came just one week after Embers shut down its new drive-thru location, which the owners said was part of “holiday planning.” The decision to close completely surprised many, though a few community members noted signs of struggle in recent days. One commenter on social media mentioned the bakery’s “bare shelves" last week, calling it “a red flag” that hinted at what was to come.

The bakery’s roots trace back to 1957, when Matt and Shelly Sehnert’s family first opened Sehnert’s Bakery. Over the decades, the shop became a McCook institution and a cornerstone of the downtown business district. Its legacy reached national acclaim in 2019 when Sehnert’s earned a James Beard America’s Classics Award — the only Nebraska business ever to receive the honor.

In August 2021, Andrew and Alix Ambriz purchased the bakery from the Sehnerts, later rebranding it as Embers Bakery &amp; Café. The couple expanded operations this spring with the addition of a drive-thru location and had teased plans for a new store in Kearney.

Several social media commenters defended the Ambriz family following the announcement, pointing to today’s economic hardships — from rising supply costs to staffing challenges — that continue to squeeze small, locally owned businesses. Others suggested that rapid growth, including the drive-thru expansion and Kearney plans, may have placed financial strain on the bakery.

The Ambriz family did not specify the reasons behind the decision to close but noted that they “succeeded at times and also made [their] mistakes along the way.”

While Embers’ ovens have gone cold for now, its impact on McCook’s culture — and its rare mark on Nebraska’s culinary map — will be remembered long after the final loaf left the oven.

The Hot Sheets: October 17, 2025

A 24-year-old man from Cozad has been charged with felony theft and criminal mischief following an incident at a Gothenburg convenience store Friday morning.

Gothenburg police were called to the store around 6:30 a.m. after a report that no employees were present. Officers arrived and confirmed the store was unattended, prompting them to contact the store manager.

Inside, a skills game had been broken into, with tools nearby. The employee who was scheduled to be on duty returned and reported that $4,000 had been deposited into two bitcoin machines, even though he still had more than $14,909 in his possession.

Christian Joyce was taken into custody and arraigned Tuesday in Dawson County Court. His bond was set at 10% of $10,000, and his next court appearance is scheduled for next week, October 28, 2025, at 11 a.m.

Joyce is also facing a shoplifting charge from an earlier incident at a Lexington store this month. He had been released on his own recognizance in that case.
