In 2022, Nebraska Game and Parks confirmed the presence of a hybrid variety of the invasive aquatic plant Eurasian watermilfoil in Iron Horse Park Lake at North Platte. This aquatic plant grows dense mats and can overtake a waterbody quickly.

Game and Parks staff plan to use an aquatic herbicide called ProcellaCOR, which is a reduced risk herbicide, to treat the hybrid Eurasian watermilfoil. ProcellaCOR has no restrictions for water recreation, fishing, or fish consumption. Staff plan to treat the western half of the lake on July 11 and the eastern half on July 25, weather permitting.

Registration is not required but it is encouraged according to the Keith County Chamber. This free event features four classes: family, open, kids (0-14) and students (15-22). SIDNEY – Brodie Mitchell and Alexys Hurt sat at a table inside a cozy coffee shop just off Interstate 80, sipping specialty drinks and discussing their decision to pursue a health care career.

The University of Nebraska at Kearney students talked about their desire to help others and make a positive impact on their communities.

“It’s a very challenging career, but yet a very gratifying one,” said Mitchell, a sophomore from Cambridge in the pre-medicine program. “When you can directly see how your work is improving somebody’s life, that’s something that’s just so rewarding.”

Mitchell wants to practice family medicine with obstetrics, allowing him to care for patients of all ages. Hurt plans to work in radiologic technology, another of the&nbsp;<a href="https://www.unk.edu/academics/health_sciences/index.php">20-plus pre-professional programs offered by UNK Health Sciences</a>.

“There’s such a wide variety of options in health care,” the sophomore from Dannebrog said. “You can go into a lot of things. It’s not just one specific career path.”

Both UNK students are part of the Health Science Club and&nbsp;<a href="https://www.unk.edu/academics/health_sciences/scholarshipprograms.php">Kearney Health Opportunities Program</a>&nbsp;(KHOP), a collaboration with the University of Nebraska Medical Center that provides scholarships, academic support and professional development activities for Lopers who plan to practice health care in rural communities.

“Being from a small town, I know what rural hospitals do for communities,” Hurt said. “It’s a completely different experience from larger hospitals. In a rural hospital, you can do a lot more and you build more personal connections with patients because you’re in a smaller community. That’s a big part of why I want to stay rural.”

“I think there’s something to be said about the camaraderie that you build in a small town,” Mitchell added. “You’re not just another doctor. I want those personal relationships with my patients, because I feel like that makes everything much more gratifying and rewarding.”

They heard the same comments during a recent trip to Sidney, population 6,400.

Mitchell and Hurt spent five days in the western Nebraska community while participating in the new Rural Immersion Program.

Available to any UNK health science student, this innovative program gives Lopers an opportunity to experience rural health care firsthand, going well beyond the traditional networking events and hospital tours. Participants are exposed to numerous aspects of the profession – administration, laboratory services, emergency department, surgery, radiology and pharmacy, to name a few – allowing them to see how these individuals work together to care for patients.

Julie Calahan, engagement and retention coordinator for UNK Health Sciences, calls it a “transformative learning experience.”

“The Rural Immersion Program is a unique opportunity for our students to gain valuable insights and experiences that go beyond the classroom,” she said. “Students are able to connect with health care providers and participate in hands-on experiences, and they’re also able to learn more about the hospital and community as a whole.”

The program launched in January 2024, when two students spent time in McCook and shadowed at Community Hospital, which hosted another student last month. A total of five UNK students will participate through Sidney Regional Medical Center this summer, including Mitchell and Hurt.

“Our goal is to help with workforce demand across the state,” Calahan said. “When we place students in these communities for a longer period of time, they have a more in-depth opportunity to be engaged and learn about the dynamics of the hospital. They also have an opportunity to meet with community leaders and learn about local initiatives.

“When they finish their professional school and are ready to start their career, they have these connecting points back to these rural communities. Our hope is that they look back at those experiences where they really connected with a community and ultimately decide to live and work there.”

With more than 900 undergraduate students currently enrolled in UNK Health Sciences, the Rural Immersion Program could serve as an important recruiting tool for hospitals that are struggling to fill their workforce needs.

There’s an urgent demand for more health care professionals in communities across Nebraska, and Sidney is no exception.

Jason Petik, chief executive officer at Sidney Regional Medical Center, called the current shortage “scary as hell.”

“We have a workforce that unfortunately went through a pandemic in the last four years and that really hit us hard,” he said. “We’re really struggling to replace the people we lost.”

With roughly 400 employees and an annual payroll over $55 million, SRMC remains an economic driver for the region and, more importantly, a necessity for the people living there. It’s the second-largest critical access hospital in the state, providing services that would otherwise be a 90-minute drive away.

During their visit, the UNK students got to see a long-term care addition scheduled to open in September and they heard about plans to build a new cancer center. The current SRMC facility was completed in 2015, so it’s also a sign of the progress happening there.

“Sidney has a lot of great things going for it,” Petik said. “Yes, it is rural, and we don’t have access to absolutely everything all of the time. But we do have a very tightknit community and a very positive culture. We’re trying to grow.”

And they want UNK graduates to be part of that growth.

SRMC and more than a dozen other providers are part of UNK’s Hospital Partners program. Representatives traveled to Kearney for the first-ever Hospital Partners Networking Event in February and a group of KHOP students visited the Sidney hospital later in the semester.

Obviously, Petik hopes these interactions lead to employment offers down the road. But he also understands the importance of promoting rural health care across the state.

“We want to help them recognize that they can have a huge impact on people’s lives in health care, and it doesn’t have to be in Lincoln or Omaha,” Petik said. “It can be in Holdrege. It can be in Imperial. It can be in Gordon. These young adults need to realize that their skill sets are so needed in rural areas.”

Mitchell’s grandparents live in nearby Lodgepole and his aunt and uncle own and operate a popular ice cream shop in Sidney, so he was already familiar with the community.

Still, he was excited to see health care “from a different perspective.”

“If there’s one thing I’ve learned from job shadowing, it’s that no matter where you go, it’s almost always different,” said Mitchell, who works as a medical scribe at Tri Valley Health System in Cambridge. “Yes, you’re still treating patients, but the structure isn’t always the same.”

He was “really impressed” by SRMC and the amount of community support the hospital receives.

“Listening to them talk about how important patient care is to them and how they’re trying to make it more efficient and effective for people makes me even more excited about where the future of health care is going,” Mitchell said.

“I really like it,” she said of Sidney. “There’s a lot more than what I thought. When they say a rural town, it’s not really what I expected.”

During a community tour, Cheyenne County Tourism Director Kendra Mitchell showcased life outside the hospital. There’s a vibrant downtown with a historic steakhouse, fancy boutique, unique bicycle shop, “the cutest” two-screen movie theater and numerous other businesses. The Downtown Sounds outdoor concert series is hosted there each summer and there’s an ongoing effort to establish a “creative district” supporting similar activities and events.

Sidney also has a stunning golf course, beautiful parks and trails and easy access to outdoor adventures in Nebraska, Colorado and Wyoming. The community is just 100 miles from Cheyenne and 170 from Denver for those who want “a little dose of city.”

A past chairwoman on the Cheyenne County Chamber of Commerce Board of Directors, Kendra Mitchell and her now-husband moved there from Fort Worth, Texas, more than a decade ago to work for Cabela’s. Although the outdoor retailer is no longer headquartered in Sidney, the young couple stayed because they love the close-knit community.

“You don’t have to live in a big city to have a full life,” she said. “You can pursue a pretty adventurous career here in our small community.”

The vice president of patient care services at SRMC has lived in Sidney for nearly three decades, serving as director of staff development at a local care center and teaching nursing classes at Western Nebraska Community College before joining the hospital 13 years ago.

She describes Sidney as a “family” that takes care of each other.

“If you spend time here, you understand the importance of the hospital to the community and you understand the importance of the community to western Nebraska,” Slagle said. “You get immersed in everything we have to offer and really get a feel for how friendly this community is.”

That message wasn’t lost on the visiting UNK students.

“These critical access hospitals in rural communities, they want you here,” Brodie Mitchell said. “They want to show you what they’re all about because they want you to come work for them someday.”

“By spending the whole week here, I get to know these people and they get to know me,” he added. “Networking is a huge part of finding a job anymore, and it’s all about who you know. So the more people you know, the more options you have, the better set up you are for a future career.”

UNK Health Sciences plans to continue growing the Rural Immersion Program, with Cozad Community Health System joining in January and other hospital partners likely to follow.

“I want to be able to offer two to three Rural Immersion Programs every year for students to take advantage of,” Calahan said. “We’ll continue to make sure this is another resource for them so they can get the most out of their learning experience.”

It’s not just one specific career path.”Both UNK students are part of the Health Science Club and&nbsp;<a href="https://www.unk.edu/academics/health_sciences/scholarshipprograms.php">Kearney Health Opportunities Program</a>&nbsp;(KHOP), a collaboration with the University of Nebraska Medical Center that provides scholarships, academic support and professional development activities for Lopers who plan to practice health care in rural communities.“Being from a small town, I know what rural hospitals do for communities,” Hurt said. “It’s a completely different experience from larger hospitals. In a rural hospital, you can do a lot more and you build more personal connections with patients because you’re in a smaller community. That’s a big part of why I want to stay rural.”“I think there’s something to be said about the camaraderie that you build in a small town,” Mitchell added. “You’re not just another doctor. I want those personal relationships with my patients, because I feel like that makes everything much more gratifying and rewarding.”They heard the same comments during a recent trip to Sidney, population 6,400.<h2>TRANSFORMATIVE EXPERIENCE</h2>Mitchell and Hurt spent five days in the western Nebraska community while participating in the new Rural Immersion Program.Available to any UNK health science student, this innovative program gives Lopers an opportunity to experience rural health care firsthand, going well beyond the traditional networking events and hospital tours. Participants are exposed to numerous aspects of the profession – administration, laboratory services, emergency department, surgery, radiology and pharmacy, to name a few – allowing them to see how these individuals work together to care for patients.Julie Calahan, engagement and retention coordinator for UNK Health Sciences, calls it a “transformative learning experience.”“The Rural Immersion Program is a unique opportunity for our students to gain valuable insights and experiences that go beyond the classroom,” she said. “Students are able to connect with health care providers and participate in hands-on experiences, and they’re also able to learn more about the hospital and community as a whole.”The program launched in January 2024, when two students spent time in McCook and shadowed at Community Hospital, which hosted another student last month. A total of five UNK students will participate through Sidney Regional Medical Center this summer, including Mitchell and Hurt.“Our goal is to help with workforce demand across the state,” Calahan said. “When we place students in these communities for a longer period of time, they have a more in-depth opportunity to be engaged and learn about the dynamics of the hospital. They also have an opportunity to meet with community leaders and learn about local initiatives.“When they finish their professional school and are ready to start their career, they have these connecting points back to these rural communities. Our hope is that they look back at those experiences where they really connected with a community and ultimately decide to live and work there.”<h2>FILLING A NEED</h2>With more than 900 undergraduate students currently enrolled in UNK Health Sciences, the Rural Immersion Program could serve as an important recruiting tool for hospitals that are struggling to fill their workforce needs.There’s an urgent demand for more health care professionals in communities across Nebraska, and Sidney is no exception.Jason Petik, chief executive officer at Sidney Regional Medical Center, called the current shortage “scary as hell.”“We have a workforce that unfortunately went through a pandemic in the last four years and that really hit us hard,” he said. “We’re really struggling to replace the people we lost.”With roughly 400 employees and an annual payroll over $55 million, SRMC remains an economic driver for the region and, more importantly, a necessity for the people living there. It’s the second-largest critical access hospital in the state, providing services that would otherwise be a 90-minute drive away.During their visit, the UNK students got to see a long-term care addition scheduled to open in September and they heard about plans to build a new cancer center. The current SRMC facility was completed in 2015, so it’s also a sign of the progress happening there.“Sidney has a lot of great things going for it,” Petik said. “Yes, it is rural, and we don’t have access to absolutely everything all of the time. But we do have a very tightknit community and a very positive culture. We’re trying to grow.”And they want UNK graduates to be part of that growth.SRMC and more than a dozen other providers are part of UNK’s Hospital Partners program. Representatives traveled to Kearney for the first-ever Hospital Partners Networking Event in February and a group of KHOP students visited the Sidney hospital later in the semester.Obviously, Petik hopes these interactions lead to employment offers down the road. But he also understands the importance of promoting rural health care across the state.“We want to help them recognize that they can have a huge impact on people’s lives in health care, and it doesn’t have to be in Lincoln or Omaha,” Petik said. “It can be in Holdrege. It can be in Imperial. It can be in Gordon. These young adults need to realize that their skill sets are so needed in rural areas.”<h2>BETTER FUTURE</h2>Mitchell’s grandparents live in nearby Lodgepole and his aunt and uncle own and operate a popular ice cream shop in Sidney, so he was already familiar with the community.Still, he was excited to see health care “from a different perspective.”“If there’s one thing I’ve learned from job shadowing, it’s that no matter where you go, it’s almost always different,” said Mitchell, who works as a medical scribe at Tri Valley Health System in Cambridge. “Yes, you’re still treating patients, but the structure isn’t always the same.”He was “really impressed” by SRMC and the amount of community support the hospital receives.“Listening to them talk about how important patient care is to them and how they’re trying to make it more efficient and effective for people makes me even more excited about where the future of health care is going,” Mitchell said.Hurt also had a positive experience.“I really like it,” she said of Sidney. “There’s a lot more than what I thought. When they say a rural town, it’s not really what I expected.”During a community tour, Cheyenne County Tourism Director Kendra Mitchell showcased life outside the hospital. There’s a vibrant downtown with a historic steakhouse, fancy boutique, unique bicycle shop, “the cutest” two-screen movie theater and numerous other businesses. The Downtown Sounds outdoor concert series is hosted there each summer and there’s an ongoing effort to establish a “creative district” supporting similar activities and events.Sidney also has a stunning golf course, beautiful parks and trails and easy access to outdoor adventures in Nebraska, Colorado and Wyoming. The community is just 100 miles from Cheyenne and 170 from Denver for those who want “a little dose of city.”A past chairwoman on the Cheyenne County Chamber of Commerce Board of Directors, Kendra Mitchell and her now-husband moved there from Fort Worth, Texas, more than a decade ago to work for Cabela’s. Although the outdoor retailer is no longer headquartered in Sidney, the young couple stayed because they love the close-knit community.“You don’t have to live in a big city to have a full life,” she said. “You can pursue a pretty adventurous career here in our small community.”Julie Slagle agrees.The vice president of patient care services at SRMC has lived in Sidney for nearly three decades, serving as director of staff development at a local care center and teaching nursing classes at Western Nebraska Community College before joining the hospital 13 years ago.She describes Sidney as a “family” that takes care of each other.“If you spend time here, you understand the importance of the hospital to the community and you understand the importance of the community to western Nebraska,” Slagle said. “You get immersed in everything we have to offer and really get a feel for how friendly this community is.”That message wasn’t lost on the visiting UNK students.“These critical access hospitals in rural communities, they want you here,” Brodie Mitchell said. “They want to show you what they’re all about because they want you to come work for them someday.”“By spending the whole week here, I get to know these people and they get to know me,” he added. “Networking is a huge part of finding a job anymore, and it’s all about who you know. So the more people you know, the more options you have, the better set up you are for a future career.”UNK Health Sciences plans to continue growing the Rural Immersion Program, with Cozad Community Health System joining in January and other hospital partners likely to follow.“I want to be able to offer two to three Rural Immersion Programs every year for students to take advantage of,” Calahan said. “We’ll continue to make sure this is another resource for them so they can get the most out of their learning experience.”

Valley Holiness Camp</a> held every summer in the area since 1911, and since 1950
just 3 miles east of Imperial. The 10-day camp kicks off on Thursday, July 18 downtown
Imperial with a Gospel Concert featuring <a href="https://youtu.be/zHTGLWKPD4Y?si=EC_ooPgZbDK3t6EI">Mark Umfleet</a>. Umfleet
won the 2021 Male Vocalist of the Year award from the Country Gospel Music
Association. The concert will be on the 700 block of Broadway in Imperial,
starting at 7pm MDT and is free to attend.

Mark Umfleet is also the Evangelist at this years IVHC. He
and his wife Dori live in Forsyth, Montana where he pastors The Point and he
and Dori operate the WeeCare Child Care, a ministry within their church. The
Umfleet’s are joined at Imperial Valley Holiness Camp this July by Marcus A.
Whitworth Sr. who will be leading worship each day, Youth worker Deb Ballard from Missouri, Children’s Workers Kris
Mustion and Kathy Weintz and Missionary Krista Landaas who serves the Native
Americans in the southwestern United States.

New to this years Camp is a Vacation Bible School intended
for kids Preschool-5th grade from the greater Imperial area as well
as kids staying at the campgrounds. The Bible School will run Monday, July 22
through Friday, July 26 from 8:30am MDT until 11:30am. Carla Taylor, current
President of Imperial Valley Holiness Camp says if there is interest in children
needing a ride from town (Imperial) out to the campgrounds, that the Camp will
provide accommodations for those kids. During the Vacation Bible School, titled
“Farm Fresh Faith”, Taylor says “we’re gonna pour into your kids and love on
them, we’re gonna sing songs about Jesus, have lessons, crafts, snacks and
spend some time with them learning about Jesus.” Carla says if you have

The entire region is invited out for any of the days of the
camp meetings, below is the daily schedule along with the Sunday schedule which
is slightly different.

states to hear the Word. Taylor says the Camps mission is to “spend time in
God’s word, developing lasting relationships with Christian friends, then take
the Word of God home to share with others.”

Carla Taylor says the Imperial Valley Holiness Camp is
looking for a camper or RV that they could borrow or rent during the camp
meetings for their youth minister who does an early 4am zoom meeting part of
her ministry. If anyone reading from the area has a small camper or RV they’d
be willing to either donate or rent for the 10 days they can reach out to
Taylor at 308-352-6501.

The Hot Sheets: July 9th, 2024

JULY 8, 2024 (OGALLALA, NEB.)&nbsp;&nbsp;— Nebraska State Troopers arrested three people and recovered multiple stolen firearms after pursuits with two stolen vehicles Saturday.

The incident began at around 12:15 p.m. MT Saturday, troopers learned that the Ogallala Police Department was in pursuit of a Ford F-150 pickup that was stolen out of Wyoming. Ogallala PD officers discontinued the pursuit as it traveled through Ogallala out of concern for public safety.

A trooper then observed the same vehicle as it exited Interstate 80 at the Brule interchange a short time later. The trooper attempted a traffic stop, but the driver refused to yield and fled westbound on Highway 30. The trooper initiated a pursuit. After entering Deuel County, the vehicle turned southbound and continued fleeing on county roads. The vehicle continued south of I-80 before coming to a stop at a residence near County Road 209 and County Road 4. All three occupants fled the vehicle on foot.

Two of the occupants then stole a Ford F-350 that was parked at the farm residence. Troopers remained in pursuit of the second stolen vehicle, while others remained at the scene to search for the third suspect. The suspects fled on various county roads in Deuel, Perkins, and Keith Counties before the returning to I-80 and fleeing eastbound. As the vehicle passed the Ogallala interchange, the Ogallala Police Department was able to successfully deploy stop sticks, which brought to the vehicle to a stop a short time later.

The two occupants were taken into custody without further incident at approximately 1:00 p.m. MT. The third suspect was taken into custody after a search of the location where the first vehicle was abandoned. All three were transported to Keith County Jail. Troopers located stolen firearms, stolen credits cards, and methamphetamine inside the first stolen vehicle.

All three suspects were arrested for possession of a stolen vehicle, possession of stolen firearms, possession of methamphetamine, possession of a stolen financial transaction device, obstruction, and criminal mischief. The driver, Michael Ayala, 20, was also arrested for flight to avoid arrest and willful reckless driving. The two other occupants are both minors, age 18.

Stolen Vehicles, Stolen Firearms Recovered after Multi-County Pursuit Ends In Ogallala

North Platte, Neb. - The NPHS Mobile Food Pantry is taking place Tuesday, July 9th at the parking lot next to the tennis courts at the high school beginning at 1:00pm and will last until the last box is distributed.

The school district said in a post that cars cannot come into the parking lot while the semi is unloading the distribution items. 325 households will be served on a first come, first serve basis, free of charge. Cars will drive through a line while volunteers will bring the box food to the vehicles.&nbsp;

Cozad, Neb. - A grass fire is taking place in the median on I-80 near Cozad just shortly after 11:00 Monday morning.

According to Nebraska 511, between MM 219 and Exit 222, drivers should be aware of a grass fire that's happening in the median near the I-80 eastbound lanes outside of Cozad. The left shoulder is closed, and drivers should stay in the right lane as crews work on the fire.&nbsp;

Lincoln, NE - July 8, 2024 - One lucky player who bought a 2by2 ticket for the Saturday, July 6 drawing is holding a ticket worth $22,000.

The Nebraska Lottery has confirmed that one ticket sold for Saturday's 2by2 draw matched all four winning numbers for the $22,000 top prize. The ticket was sold at Trails West, 36457 Us Highway 34, in Trenton. The winning numbers from Saturday's 2by2 draw were and Red 03, 11, White 03, 09.

Pool Cool is continuing this year in&nbsp;Southwest Nebraska Public Health Department (SWNPHD).&nbsp;&nbsp;This program works with local swimming pools to train pool staff to provide children with education about skin cancer and sun safety during their swim lessons.&nbsp;

Skin cancer accounts for nearly 1.3 million new cases of cancer each year, making it the most common form of cancer found in the United States. As the heat starts to bring the kids out of the house and into the pools, SWNPHD encourages residents to remember to take action to protect their skin now to help prevent skin cancer in the future.

&nbsp;“Most would think adding some sunscreen a couple times a day is enough, and even though it is a good start there are few more things we can all do to protect ourselves from the sun,” states Sarah Minnick, Program Manager with SWNPHD.

The Pool Cool program manager, Sarah Minnick, has been visiting area swimming pools to increase awareness of sun protection practices with pool staff and pool users. SWNPHD will provide signage for the pools that can be used to educate swimmers and act as a reminder. “We will also be providing free sunscreen so if someone forgets to apply before arriving to the pool, they will have some readily available,” Minnick added. “Using the Pool Cool program that the National Cancer Institute has made available for area pools is a great tool to help educate all swimmers and pool employees on sun safety and preventing skin cancer.”
