LINCOLN, Nebraska&nbsp;– During Husker Harvest Days Wednesday, Sept. 11, Nebraska’s Natural Resources Districts (NRDs) recognized three individuals, who will be inducted into the NRD Hall of Fame later this month.

“Nebraska’s Natural Resources Districts involve many dedicated individuals working to protect our natural resources,” said Martin Graff, president of the Nebraska Association of Resources Districts (NARD). “We’re proud to recognize these outstanding individuals for the significant improvements they’ve made to our natural resources, and the NRD Hall of Fame is one small way to thank them.”

Annually, Nebraska’s NRDs nominate and vote for individuals who have made significant contributions to improving the state’s natural resources. Hall of Fame categories include an NRD Director, NRD Employee and NRD Supporter. The NRD Supporter includes an individual outside the NRD system who has shown tremendous care and leadership in Nebraska’s ongoing conservation efforts.

<a>Larry Moore served nearly five decades on the Upper Big Blue NRD board, from 1975 to 2022. As a past board member, Moore continues to be involved by attending NRD board meetings and speaking out on topics of concern, lending his insight as a farmer as well as his vast institutional knowledge regarding NRD matters.</a>

Dedicated to conservation, Moore has led by example in soil and water management, transitioning his family farm to no-till and incorporating cover crops. He has continuously invested in water conservation since the 1970s, moving from gravity irrigation to center pivots, and more recently installing soil moisture sensors and irrigation scheduling technology to improve efficiency and reduce the likelihood of nitrogen leaching.

His leadership extended beyond his farm, actively participating in public meetings and representing the area in the Big Blue River Compact. Moore’s enduring commitment to conservation and public service has significantly impacted the community and the environment.

Stanley Staab – NRD Employee (posthumously)

<a>Stanley Staab served as the Lower Elkhorn NRD general manager for 29 years. He began his career with Nebraska’s NRDs in 1979 as the information &amp; education coordinator at the Upper Big Blue NRD. He became the general manager of the Lower Elkhorn NRD in 1986 and retired in 2015.</a>

During his nearly 36-year career, Staab was instrumental in numerous flood control projects, the construction of recreation areas, and the development of rural water systems. He also championed the establishment of new trails, including the Cowboy Trail Connector in Norfolk.

Staab passed away on March 5, 2024, at age 77. His leadership and commitment to protecting natural resources leave a lasting legacy.

As a third-generation farmer and Nebraska’s 44th District senator from 2015 to 2022, Dan Hughes championed natural resources, particularly water rights during his time in the Nebraska Unicameral.

Serving on and chairing the Natural Resources Committee, he was instrumental in passing legislation to protect groundwater and land rights for irrigators and balancing the interests of agriculture and the environment. His knowledge of business and farming gave him the ability to see both sides of the issue and create a resolution that pleased both parties while also protecting the natural resources being disputed. Now, as District 5 commissioner for the Nebraska Game and Parks Commission, Hughes continues to advocate for Nebraska’s natural resources.

He also continues to be a good steward of the land and water on his farm that he shares with his two children in Venango, passing his knowledge and passion of natural resources onto the next generation.

Natural Resources Districts Hall of Fame inductees will be recognized at the NRD annual conference dinner banquet in Kearney, Nebraska, Monday, Sept. 23.

NRD Hall of Fame Inductees Announced at Husker Harvest Days

Gothenburg, Neb. - An eastbound loaded coal Union Pacific train derailed Sunday near Gothenburg.&nbsp;&nbsp;

According to Union Pacific spokesperson Meg Siffring, the eastbound train derailed Sunday morning around 9:25 am. 16 coal cars derailed as the result of the accident. No injuries were reported.&nbsp;

The derailment may cause delays for trains heading east and westbound. Siffring states the clean-up process is underway, and the cause of the derailment is under investigation.&nbsp;

Union Pacific coal train derails near Gothenburg Sunday morning, crews on scene cleaning up

(North Platte, Nebraska) – The third annual National Avocado Launching Championship came to a close Saturday afternoon after a day filled with comradery, competition, and of course, flying avocados.&nbsp;

This unique sporting event, at Pals Brewing Company in North Platte, consisted of a Friday night event for the contestants. They were given the opportunity to test out their launching mechanisms one last time and get a feel for where the competition would be taking place. After five hours of test launches the evening ended and the anticipation of Saturday morning was high.&nbsp;

The National Avocado Launching Championship began at 10:20am on Saturday. Contestants played through two rounds of pool play, followed by a 16-team single elimination bracket. The launching mechanisms ranged from trebuchets to water balloon launchers, spring-loaded devices to mounted crossbow-like contraptions, and more. The dedication and creativity the teams brought to the competition was incredible. Spectators cheered on the teams and many patrons of Pals Brewing came to take a look as well. After hours of competition, avocado mascot races, and trips to grab brews and food from Pals, the 2024 National Avocado Launching champion was declared!&nbsp;

Team Holy Guacamole of North Platte came in first place. Team captain Brian Johnston and his teammates Joe Staroska and Jeff Pearsal were awarded $3,500 and ultimate glory. The runner up was Brown Sugar 2.0 of North Platte. Team captain Daniel Vega and his teammates were the proud winners of $2,000. The other two teams to win prize money were Libertarian Launchers of Sidney and Avid/Candlewood Suites North Platte. Both teams were awarded $750.&nbsp;

Initial units arrived on the scene declaring the fire now named the Black Diamond, very actively spreading north. Thedford Incident Commander requested mutual aid be paged from Mullen, Stapleton, and Tryon VFD's, as well as Thedford VFD's second Tender T44 and 1 grass rig from Brownlee respond. T44 responded with 1 personnel and T24 responded with 2 personnel. 

After additional resources from Seneca, Thedford, and Mullen arrived on scene, Brownlee, Stapleton, and Tryon units were advised they were no longer needed and returned to their stations. After the Black Diamond Fire was contained, Mullen units were returned to service. 

Thedford Fire Incident Command declared the fire contained and extinguished and returned to service around 1540.Thedford units returned to service around 1630. Black Diamond was contained at 138 acres.&nbsp;&nbsp;

North Platte, NE –The West Central District Health Department Announces Leadership Transition

After nearly 17 years of dedicated service to the community, Shannon Vanderheiden, Executive Director of the West Central District Health Department (WCDHD), will be stepping down from her position, effective December 31, 2024. Vanderheiden’s unwavering commitment to advancing public health initiatives has significantly shaped the health and well-being of residents across the district.

Under Vanderheiden’s leadership, WCDHD has seen remarkable growth and success, including the implementation of critical public health programs and services. Her tireless work helped build a healthier future for the area, and her contributions will be remembered for years to come.

The WCDHD Board of Health has selected Meghan Trevino, currently Assistant Executive Director, as the incoming Executive Director. Trevino, a North Platte resident, joined WCDHD in 2020 and has served as Assistant Executive Director for the past 2.5 years. Trevino brings a wealth of experience and a deep commitment to continuing the organization’s mission of promoting health and well-being. With her experience and dedication to public health, Trevino is well-prepared to take on this important leadership role.

Before being selected, Keith County youth pitch their philanthropic ideas, offer a plan to implement their project, and calculate how much it will cost. Those selected receive up to $1,000 to bring their project to life.&nbsp;

Keith County Foundation beginning application period for Youth Inspired Philantrhopy Project for this year

North Platte, Nebraska – The West Central District Health Department confirmed that a mosquito pool in Lincoln County has tested positive for the West Nile Virus (WNV). The end of the summer season (August to September) is the most likely time of the year that positive West Nile samples are collected and reported. The health department is advising residents to continue to protect themselves against mosquito bites.

According to the Nebraska Department of Health and Human Services (NE DHHS), human WNV infections can follow in the wake of positive mosquito pools, with a peak around Labor Day and disappearing around mid-September.

Approximately 8 out of 10 of people infected with WNV do not experience symptoms. The remaining 2 out of 10 people may experience fever, rash, headache fatigue, and joint pain. Symptom onset is typically 3 to 14 days after being bitten by an infected mosquito. In rare cases, WNV can cause severe disease leading to possible muscle weakness, stiff neck, disorientation, tremors, convulsions, paralysis and coma. Older adults and people with compromised immune systems are at an increased risk of experiencing more severe symptoms. There is no specific treatment for WNV. Symptomatic supportive care is provided when appropriate.

West Central District Health Department recommends people protect themselves from mosquito bites by wearing lightweight protective clothing (including long-sleeved shirts and long pants) and by using an EPA registered Insect repellent.

Residents are encouraged to frequently drain containers and other standing or stagnant water around their homes to disrupt the breeding cycle of mosquitoes.

One Ford F-150 truck remains to win in the Nebraska Lottery’s 2023 Truck$ &amp; Buck$ Scratch game. The game has closed, and holders of winning tickets have until September 18, 2024, to claim prizes.

Introduced in May 2023, the 28th edition of the $2 Truck$ &amp; Buck$ Scratch game featured the 2023 Ford F-150 XLT 4x4 SuperCrew Flex Fuel truck as its top prize, as well as cash and Ethanol-enriched fuel prizes. The game has sold out and there is no ticket inventory left.

Nebraska Lottery Scratch tickets are valid for 180 days after the game closing date. The 2023 Truck$ &amp; Buck$ Scratch game began the closing process on March 22. Tickets from the game must be redeemed by Wednesday, September 18, 2024.

Nebraska Department of Transportation

Sept. 11, 2024 (McCook, Neb.) — Weather permitting, work will begin Sept. 23 on US-83, from reference post 44.76 to 55.41, according to the Nebraska Department of Transportation (NDOT).

Paulsen, Inc. of Cozad is the contractor for this project. This project is part of the Super 2 Corridor from McCook to North Platte. Work starting this fall will include bridge replacement, grading and culvert extensions. The remaining work of adding passing lanes, performing bridge repair, earth shoulder construction, seeding, milling and overlaying the road with asphalt will start spring 2025.

Nebraska Department of TransportationSept. 11, 2024 (McCook, Neb.) — Weather permitting, work will begin Sept. 23 on US-83, from reference post 44.76 to 55.41, according to the Nebraska Department of Transportation (NDOT).Paulsen, Inc. of Cozad is the contractor for this project. This project is part of the Super 2 Corridor from McCook to North Platte. Work starting this fall will include bridge replacement, grading and culvert extensions. A Red Flag Warning will go in effect this afternoon for much of the listening area beginning at 1:00pm (CT)/12:00pm (MT) and will expire Thursday night at 11:00pm (CT)/10:00pm (MT). According to the National Weather Service, North Platte office (NWS), the warning is for parts of Central Nebraska and Western Nebraska.&nbsp;

The NWS states strong southerly winds are expected and will continue through the overnight hours. Thursday afternoon will see the strongest wind gust. &nbsp;

Thursday wind gusts can reach anywhere from 25 - 30 mph with excessive wind gust of 40 mph. Any fire started could quickly spread. Check with your local fire departments about fire bans in the area.&nbsp;
