According to a post made on social media by Red Willow County Sheriff Kevin Darling, a 14-year-old pregnant mare was shot and killed sometime between Friday evening and Saturday morning. The incident took place south of road 715 and east of 384, which is outside of McCook.&nbsp;

Lincoln, NE – December 12, 2024 – The Mega Millions jackpot has been growing for over three months. Because of the high jackpot, the Nebraska Lottery reminds customers to set spending and time limits.

A string of drawings without a jackpot winner has grown the estimated Mega Millions jackpot to its highest level since September. There have been 26 consecutive drawings since September 13 without a jackpot winner. This run has grown the estimated jackpot for the Friday, December 13 drawing to $670 million or $317.8 million with the cash option selected. This is the 8th largest jackpot in the history of the game.

The largest Mega Millions jackpot on record occurred in August 2023 when one ticket was sold in Florida for a $1.602 billion jackpot.

Even though the next Mega Millions drawing will be held on the supposedly “unlucky” date of Friday the 13th, someone could win the big prize. Seven Mega Millions jackpots have been won on a Friday the 13th. The last time was on January 13, 2023, when a $1.348 billion prize was won in Maine.

KEARNEY, NEB. – Delegates representing farm and ranch families from all 93 Nebraska counties outlined key agricultural policy priorities and elected new leaders for Nebraska Farm Bureau (NEFB) as part of the organization’s 107th Annual Meeting and Convention held Dec. 8-10 in Kearney. Delegates discussed a broad spectrum of agricultural policy issues to provide direction for the organization.

The demand for energy is increasing at an unprecedented rate. The agricultural sector in Nebraska serves as both a current and potential energy resource. While delegates adopted policy to support updating the electrical transmission infrastructure, they opposed the U.S. Department of Energy’s National Interest Electric Corridors (NIETC). Biofuels, especially ethanol, have played a crucial role in reducing the nation's dependence on foreign energy sources for transportation and will continue to do so in the future. Delegates adopted policy to support the production of Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF) in Nebraska.

“As the demand for renewable fuels increases, producers have the opportunity to access new markets, which will enhance the resilience and profitability of the agricultural economy while fostering a sustainable future for generations. We advocate for the use of domestically grown products in the production of Sustainable Aviation Fuel. However, it is essential to avoid imposing specific conservation practices as a requirement for feedstocks to qualify for SAF production,” said Mark McHargue, NEFB President.

Nebraska Farm Bureau has long been a supporter of beginning and young farmers and ranchers. Delegates advanced national policy to the American Farm Bureau Federation’s Annual Meeting and Convention in January aimed at making U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) and Farm Service Agency (FSA) loans more accessible.

“Today’s beginning and young farmers and ranchers face challenges including access to land, capital, affordable housing, and federal programs. To secure the future of agriculture, we must empower the next generation of farmers and ranchers with the resources they need to succeed. By making USDA loans more accessible and flexible, we open doors for beginning farmers and ranchers to start and grow their operations, ensuring a sustainable agricultural industry for years to come,” said McHargue.

Delegates also reaffirmed their support for Nebraska’s livestock industry, consumer choice, and proper food labeling surrounding the discussion of lab-produced protein, which involves the production of protein products from animal cells grown in a laboratory setting.

“Our delegates reiterated how vitally important Nebraska’s livestock industry is to our state’s agricultural complex, and voted to ensure no state tax dollars should be used to purchase or research lab produced protein for human consumption. At the same time, they overwhelmingly voted to ensure consumers have the opportunity to choose what they are feeding themselves and their families. Nebraska Farm Bureau also firmly believes in the importance of clear and accurate labeling for lab-produced protein products,” said McHargue

The lack of rural veterinarians, particularly those focused on large animal care, has been an ongoing concern for farmers and ranchers in Nebraska. NEFB has supported efforts to encourage large animal veterinarians to locate to underserved areas in Nebraska. Delegates this year adopted policy to support the Nebraska Elite 11 Veterinarian program. The program is a scholarship program for Nebraska students aimed at increasing the number of new veterinarians practicing in production animal practices in rural Nebraska

“Our representatives addressed various concerns that significantly impact the lives of farmers, ranchers, and all residents of Nebraska. Their effective leadership is essential for advancing agriculture and ensuring the overall prosperity of our state,” said McHargue.

In addition to setting state and making national policy recommendations, delegates also held elections for positions on the Nebraska Farm Bureau board of directors.

Katie Olson, a Holt County Farm Bureau member, was re-elected to serve as the First Vice President of the organization. Olson and her husband, James, have a cow/calf operation and grow irrigated corn and soybeans near Atkinson.

Matt Jedlicka, a Colfax County Farm Bureau member, was re-elected to serve as the Central Region representative. Jedlicka and his wife, Sharee, partner with his family to grow row crops and operate a cattle feed yard near Schuyler.

Jim Stewart, a Lancaster County Farm Bureau member, was elected to serve as the Southeast Region representative. Stewart farms and has a cash grain operation near Lincoln.

KEARNEY, NEB. – Grant Jones was named recipient of the 2024 Young Farmers and Ranchers (YF&amp;R) Achievement in Agriculture Award. The award was announced Dec. 10 at the Member Appreciation luncheon during Nebraska Farm Bureau’s (NEFB) 107th&nbsp;Annual Meeting and Convention in Kearney.

Jones is a Chase County Farm Bureau member and was selected based on performance in farm or ranch management, setting and achieving goals, overcoming obstacles, and service to his community and Farm Bureau.

As the fourth generation on his family’s operation, Jones always knew he belonged on the ranch. After graduating in 2014 from the University of Nebraska–Lincoln with his bachelor’s degree in animal science, Jones returned home to find his place on the operation. Jones, alongside his parents, owns and operates Chundy Land and Cattle and Chundy Aquaculture.

From cows to row crops to shrimp, Jones saw immense opportunity in diversification. Today, Chundy Land and Cattle encompasses a registered SimAngus seedstock herd, a backgrounding lot, custom grazing, hay, and a row crop operation. Chundy Aquaculture is a direct-to-consumer shrimp farm.

Jones serves as the Southwest Region YF&amp;R committee member and is an active Chase County Farm Bureau board member. Jones serves on NEFB’s State Legislative Policy Committee (SLPC). Outside of his extensive Farm Bureau involvement, Jones serves on the Nebraska Angus Board and the zoning board in Chase County.

Grant Jones of Chase County Named Nebraska Farm Bureau’s Achievement Award Winner

Imperial, Neb. - The Imperial Police Department is searching for a suspicious individual who was reported entering a garage on Tuesday.&nbsp;

According to a post made to social media, the Imperial Police Department (IPD), were notified and responded to a report of a suspicious individual on Tuesday. While investigating the incident, IPD says that a male subject entered an open garage and trespassed.&nbsp;

A local neighbor spotted the Indvidual and scared him off the scene. The IPD states the suspect has been identified as Ryan Powell and charges will be pursued. Powell is wanted for questioning.&nbsp;&nbsp;

This incident is a reminder to citizens that it's importance of being aware of your surroundings and locking doors to vehicles, houses, sheds, etc. IPD says while the suspects intentions are unclear, the community's involvement was crucial in identifying him.&nbsp;

Community members are encouraged to report any signs of Powell or his vehicle. The vehicle looks to be an SUV potential a 2nd generation Chevrolet Equinox (2010-2017) and appears to be a light color.

According to IPD,&nbsp;all individuals are considered innocent until proven guilty. Law Enforcement will be out patrolling but the eyes and ears of the community are essential in preventing crime.&nbsp;

Imperial Police searching for suspicious individual for questioning 

KEARNEY, NEB. -- Ten farmers, ranchers, and agribusiness professionals from across Nebraska have been selected for Nebraska Farm Bureau’s (NEFB) 2025 Leadership Academy.&nbsp;They will begin a year-long program starting in January.

“The goal of Leadership Academy is to equip the future leaders of Farm Bureau with the tools they need to successfully advocate for agriculture, connect with members, and embody the grassroots mission. The opportunities to serve in leadership roles in Farm Bureau and our state are vast and Leadership Academy provides participants the opportunity to develop the skills needed to step into those roles&nbsp;and push Farm Bureau and their communities forward,” said Audrey Schipporeit, NEFB’s director of generational engagement and facilitator of the 2025 Leadership Academy.

Academy members will participate in sessions&nbsp;<a>focused on leadership development, understanding the county, state, and national structure of Farm Bureau and its grassroots network, policy work on agricultural issues, and the importance of agricultural literacy. The group will also travel to the Capitols in Lincoln and Washington, D.C. to visit with elected officials and agenc</a>y representatives.

“We are eager to work with this group of diverse individuals and are excited to support their passion, ambition, and commitment to agriculture. We cannot wait to see the rippling impact they will have on their communities, state, and world. Congratulations to the NEFB Leadership Academy Class of 2025,” said Schipporeit.

The 2025 Nebraska Farm Bureau Leadership Academy members are:

Kris Rut is the president of Arthur County Farm Bureau and resides near Arthur, Neb., where she ranches alongside her husband, Tom. Together, they have four children. In addition to her work on the ranch, Kris is the agriculture education instructor and FFA advisor at Arthur County Schools. Kris was named Nebraska Farm Bureau Foundation’s FFA Advisor of the Year in 2024.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Hannah Pearson is a member of Custer County Farm Bureau. She grew up on a commercial cow-calf operation and was actively involved in showing Hereford cattle at the state and national level. She attended Texas Tech University and competed on the meat and livestock judging teams. Hannah returned home to Nebraska and works at Custer County Feeders while working to establish her own cattle herd.&nbsp;

Chad Nienhueser is a member of Adams/Webster County Farm Bureau. He grew up on his family’s farm near Kenesaw and attended Central Community College in Hastings. Chad currently holds the position of president of the Adams/Webster County Board. Chad is married and has two children, ages 12 and 10.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Lisa Bousquet is a member of Dakota County Farm Bureau. Lisa and her family farm in rural Dakota County where they have a diversified livestock and crop operation. She manages the Dakota/Thurston County Fair and is involved in many community organizations, including Dakota County 4-H where she serves as a leader.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Teagan Thode is a member of Keith County Farm Bureau and is a lifelong resident of Ogallala. Teagan is a sales agronomist and has been actively involved in agriculture his entire life. He began his journey with the Collegiate Farm Bureau and is eager to expand his engagement through the Leadership Academy.&nbsp;

Bruce Williams, a member of Saunders County Farm Bureau, grew up on a Saunders County crop and livestock farm. After college, he worked as a Territory Manager for John Deere for 14 years across Kansas, Colorado, and Nebraska. He married Amy, completed his MBA, and began part-time farming before fully transitioning back to Northern Saunders County. Together with Amy and their four children, they raise corn, seed soybeans, alfalfa, and chickens.

Matt Eggleston is a member of Custer County Farm Bureau and grew up on a small farming/ranching operation. After returning home, Matt focused on revitalizing the pastureland through managed grazing practices. He has been a member of the Custer County Farm Bureau Board of Directors for two years and currently serves as president. Matt and his wife have four children and enjoy life in a small town.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Halie Groth is a member of Buffalo County Farm Bureau and resides in Kearney. She was raised on a farming and feedlot operation in Boone County and attended the University of Nebraska- Lincoln, where she earned a bachelor’s degree in Agricultural Leadership. Halie works as a Crop Protection Territory Manager for Corteva Agriscience and enjoys spending her free time with her family and watching Husker volleyball.&nbsp;

Joni Titus is a member of Cherry County Farm Bureau. She is the fifth generation on her family’s ranch where they raise black Angus cattle. Joni holds an MBA and works as a supervisor for Intuit (QuickBooks). She is involved in her community, serving as chair for the local youth wrestling club. Joni looks forward to better understanding the agriculture industry and growing as a leader through the Leadership Academy program.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Nick Birdsley is a member of Douglas County Farm Bureau and is an Agriculture Educator at Ralston High School. A graduate from the Urban Ag Academy, his passion for teaching urban youth about where their food comes from and preparing them for careers within the ag industry is apparent. Nick has served in other programs focused on advocacy and education including the&nbsp;Nebraska Agricultural Youth Council and the Nebraska Children's and Families Foundation. NORTH PLATTE, NEB.–– The Gudmundsen Sandhills Laboratory has been awarded the&nbsp; Outstanding Animal Care Award by the Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee (IACUC)&nbsp; at the University of Nebraska—Lincoln.&nbsp;&nbsp;

The laboratory was honored with the award at the 25th anniversary of the Gudmundsen Sandhills&nbsp; Laboratory open house in August attended by its peers and the people it serves.&nbsp; The Outstanding Animal Care Award honors and recognizes individuals or groups that go above&nbsp; and beyond to ensure that animals are cared for ethically and humanely while following all&nbsp; procedures. The distribution of this award is carefully considered by the IACUC committee at&nbsp; the university and is not often awarded.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Kelly Heath, the director and attending veterinarian for the animal care program at UNL, noted&nbsp; the ranch crew’s practices of cleaning and maintaining facilities, timely record keeping, and&nbsp; cooperative approach no matter the situation.&nbsp;&nbsp;

“I never have to worry when I go to the Gudmundsen Sandhills Laboratory, and I can be&nbsp; confident that their crew has taken care of things,” Heath said.&nbsp;

The university recently underwent a peer review process with the Association for Assessment&nbsp; and Accreditation of Laboratory Animal Care (AAALAC) to renew its accreditation with the&nbsp; association, making collaboration with other accredited institutions more accessible while&nbsp; enhancing the research stature of the university.&nbsp;&nbsp;

The ranch was one of many animal research extension facilities evaluated for this review. The&nbsp; peer review group noted that the Gudmundsen Sandhills Laboratory is the gold standard of what&nbsp; animal care facilities should look like.&nbsp;&nbsp;

This high praise led to the idea of awarding the GSL staff the Outstanding Animal Care Award.&nbsp; To the Gudmundsen Sandhills Laboratory crew, receiving this award justifies the reasoning&nbsp; behind many of the tasks that they do on a daily basis.&nbsp;&nbsp;

John Nollette, the lead ranch technician, believes the protocol of the ranch has become second&nbsp; nature for the workers with cleaning up after every session, communicating with project leaders,&nbsp; and keeping concise and accurate records.&nbsp;&nbsp;

“We take a lot of pride in what we do, and it has kind of become our way of life,” Nollette said.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Beyond the daily tasks and protocols required of the ranch, research technologist Jacki Musgrave&nbsp; credits the success of the ranch to the team dynamic that has been established.&nbsp;&nbsp;

This dynamic makes it easier for the crew to hold themselves to a high standard and for each&nbsp; member to easily find their place and purpose on the team.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Moving forward, the ranch plans to continue to rely on the protocols set in place and the culture&nbsp; they have built to find success and care for their cattle in a humane and ethical manner.&nbsp;&nbsp;

“You do these things every day, but to get recognized for it was pretty special for our crew,”&nbsp; Nollette said.&nbsp;&nbsp;

KEARNEY, NEB. - Morrill County Farm Bureau member, David Schuler, won the 2024 Nebraska Farm Bureau (NEFB) Young Farmers and Ranchers (YF&amp;R) Discussion Meet. The award was announced Dec. 10 at the Member Appreciation luncheon at Nebraska Farm Bureau’s 107th&nbsp;Annual Convention in Kearney. &nbsp;

Schuler received the top score during the final round of the Discussion Meet contest. Rather than debating, contestants work to develop a solution to a problem being discussed, building on each other’s contributions. Competitors in the annual contest must be prepared to speak on several current agricultural related topics; the selected question is announced a short time prior to the contest. &nbsp;

Schuler returned home to his family’s ranch near Bridgeport in 2018. Schuler, his wife, Christy, and his parents run Schuler Red Angus, a registered Red Angus seedstock operation. Schuler has been active in Nebraska Farm Bureau, serving on the YF&amp;R committee and as a voting delegate at the state convention.

Planning a hunting trip this fall? Look no further than Ogallala, Nebraska! Pheasants Forever Inc. is excited to introduce a new initiative focused on increased public access around Ogallala, Nebraska called the Nebraska Community Access Partnership (NCAP). Access to quality acres to pursue game is considered one of the limiting factors influencing hunters, especially individuals new to the sport. In addition, revenue from hunting can have significant impacts on local businesses and communities.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Pheasants Forever, Inc. and Nebraska Game and Parks Commission have recently received a grant award from the Nebraska Environmental Trust for $845,000 over 3 years. The funding creates more opportunity for private landowners to enroll high-quality CRP, rangeland and ungrazed grasslands voluntarily into a 5-year walk-in-hunting agreement through the Open Fields and Water Program (OFW). Landowners willing to allow public walk-in hunting access can receive a one-time sign-up bonus of $25/ac for quality CRP or $10/ac for working rangeland or undisturbed grasslands. This is in addition to OFW annual payments which range from $.50/ac-$15/ac depending on habitat quality.&nbsp;&nbsp;

The focus of this new initiative is within 60 miles of Ogallala, and offers the NCAP incentives within the focal area of Keith, Garden, Deuel and Arthur Co with secondary focus in Lincoln, Cheyenne, Perkins, Morrill and Kimball Co. The focal area has lodging and food resources already in place for a successful hunting trip! This in turn benefits the community by creating a new hunting ‘hub’ to benefit both hunters seeking quality areas in pursuit of a variety of game species (prairie grouse, pheasants, quail, pronghorn, mule deer, and turkey) and the community during ‘off season’ of summer tourism.&nbsp;&nbsp;

“We’re excited to bring this opportunity to the local communities like Ogallala and Paxton. The economic impact of the outdoor industry is critical for rural communities and these area businesses have great amenities to offer,” says Kelsi Wehrman, Nebraska State Coordinator.&nbsp; “The local PF Chapter, Western NE Ringnecks, and the private landowners have done a fantastic job supporting the effort. We’re thrilled with the early acreage results.”&nbsp;

Since rolling out the program in April of 2024, NGPC and Pheasants Forever Inc. biologists have enrolled over 44,000 acres of CRP and rangeland. With this new program, over 30,000 acres have been added to the Open Fields and Waters public access program, including new rangeland in Garden and Arthur County totally 26,000 acres! Ogallala, Ne - The City of Ogallala held there regular meeting Tuesday night. Newly elected council members Kevin Block, Austyn DuPiere and Dustin Holstein took their oath of office before they started their term(s) with the new Ogallala City Council.

Also, Darryl Weddington was recognized for his years of service as a council member and the council's Vice-President.

Beginning on January 15, after the next council meeting, Ogallala City Administrator Kevin Wilkens will be joining the POST in our Ogallala studio the day after council meetings to recap and speak about other pertinent things in the city.&nbsp;

Grant City Council Agenda - December 10, 2024

McCook, Neb. - The Nebraska Game and Parks Commission is seeking information to the wanton waste of a whitetail buck that was killed late in November.

According to the post made to social media, the incident occurred between November 27 and November 28, approximately 1/2 mile south of McCook off Road 384.
